The importance to consider Porter’s model to analyse the attractiveness of a certain industry is essential for any company. On this model depends the very basics constrains to determine whether the company launches, or not, itself to a new market.
One may suggest that the company itself is released to the competition forces to an unknown environment. For this reason, is necessary to cover certain aspects, which may determine the attractiveness of a sector as a whole. Porter’s model is an strategic tool designed to give a global overview, rather than a detailed business analysis technique. It helps to review the strengths of a market position, based on five key forces that interact between each other. By understanding this interaction, one may analyse the criteria for an accurate decision related to enter, or not, into a specific market. Furthermore, the use of this tool helps to understand both the strength of the company’s current competitive position and the strength of a position the company is considering moving into. In effect, one may take fair advantage of a strength position, while improving a situation of weakness. In the same logic, one can detect de areas of opportunity and also possible threats the company is willing to avoid. Porter’s five forces analysis is used to identify whether a new product, service or business have the potential to be profitable. According to Michaud (2008), there is a huge variety of ways to classify the industry of serious gaming. However, accepting the ambiguities and possible challenges inherent in this. The purpose of a serious game is to get to interact with an IT application that combines aspects of tutoring, teaching, training, communications and information, with a recreational element. This combination aims to make practical, useful content (serious) and enjoyable (game). It is achieved by developing scenarios that are at once practical and enjoyable. Alessi and Trollip (2001) pointed pedagogical and conceptual variances between game-based learning (GBL) and simulation-based learning (SBL), i.e. they differ on the situation and procedures (the way one learn about something), and processes and environment (learning to do something). As observed in the figure below, in this area many segments overlap each other. It means that they share certain characteristics and differ in others. However, there might be many different interpretations and criteria to either classify or distinguish between each other. Nevertheless, beyond the theoretical and abstract definitions, there are some factual constrains regarding the operability of the businesses, which perform in the one or the other industry. For the present task, the game-based learning (GBL) sector is evaluated. It is important to stress that based on an initial market research one could decide on this specific sector. Very diverse reasons oriented the selection of this sector. First, the forecasts and projections according to specialized market studies (Adkins 2013), which will be …show more content…
The success of the products depends more on their design and content than on technical issues. More information regarding this issue will be presented as Key Resources – Chapter 4.
In other words, the financial backup needed to invest in the development of more sophisticated technology and a competent team to manage these three resources are key factors, which could be developed with time. On the other hand, the GBL sector offers a more flexible and less complicated investment scenario for a small company willing to enter the market. Moreover, it could be the start phase, while the company gets expertise about the business; it reduces the cost of learning, and develops its human resources.
To sum up, the selection of the GBL sector is mainly based on the identification of tendencies of the market: the evolution of the devices towards mobile gadgets, growth of the target market (K-12 and Consumers), geographical trends and predisposition, the low barriers to enter the market, and the profitability of the Edugames-sector.
As aforementioned, the analysis consists of 5 criteria. One by one was pondered and rated based on the risk each one
