Burning Of Nylons

With the process of making toothbrushes and the use of them, most people are unaware of the disposal of the products in toothbrushes. For each item in a toothbrush, different effects occur. Since nylon makes up the bristles of the toothbrush, nylon is disposed at a slow rate. When it is thrown away, it eventually decays but because it has such a slow decomposing process, it builds up in the landfill. Other ways nylons are disposed of are by being burned. The burning of nylon results in chemicals being released into the air. Some of these chemicals are: Carbon Monoxide, Ammonia, Ketones, and Hydrogen Cyanide. Thirty one million tons of plastic arrive at landfills. 90% of the plastic that arrives stay in the landfill because it is not biodegradable. Another way that plastic is disposed of is open, uncontrolled burning. Burning plastics is highly toxic to our environment. It releases acids, gases, particulate matter, Carbon Monoxide, nitrogen oxides, metals, and furans. The pollution can cause skin diseases, reproductive or developmental problems, immune system damage, liver damage, and/or cancer. Another product in a toothbrush that is disposed of is a staple which holds the bristles to the handle. Staples refuse to biodegrade when put into landfills. A final toothbrush product that is disposed of is cardboard. Cardboard is used to package the toothbrush. 75% of cardboard ends up in landfills. When decomposing in landfills, cardboard releases Methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Most of these products ending up in the landfills are harmful to society. 80% of landfills tend to have leaks in their liners. Leaks in the liner create the potential of having hazardous chemicals seeping into groundwater used for drinking. Most of the products used in toothbrushes have similar disposal
