Nurses and midwives are commonly exposed to bullying behaviours because they are often employed at workplaces that have organized systems and structures which can increase the risk of bullying. Victims suffer serious psychiatric, psychosomatic, and psychosocial problems (Leymann, 1990). In a study by Yıldırım (2007), those exposed to bullying were reported to suffer from stress, headaches, and fatigue. A study conducted with health care providers in New Zealand revealed that people who are exposed to bullying were under more strain and their well-being was adversely affected (Cooper-Thomas et al., 2013). In numerous studies of nurses exposed to bullying, they displayed severe symptoms of anxiety and depression (Sa&Fleming, 2008) Workers exposed to bullying reportedly suffered mental tiredness and mental worry and depression and displayed more psychosomatic symptoms (Agervold&Mikkelsen, 2004).Workplace bullying has bad effects not only on the health of employees but also on their work performance. Job satisfaction decreases, there is an increased rate of sick leave and there is decreased work performance. In a study conducted in Canada, nurses exposed to bullying had lower motivation and more intent to leave their jobs than did those who were not exposed to bullying (Trepanier et al., 2013).
