Cyberbullying has been a major issue among children and young adults around the United States. Cyber bullying is directly defined as “willful or repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices” (“What is CyberBullying?”). If an adult is involved in the incident, then it can be defined as cyber-harassment, or cyberstalking, which is a crime that has legal consequences (“Cyberbullying”). Ryan had some mental and physical disabilities, so he was the target of many bullies. Ryan shared a personal story with one of his friends, then that friend turned on him and began a rumor that Ryan was gay. Ryan had been talking to a pretty girl from his school online for a while after the rumor began. He later found out that the girls were playing a joke on him by convincing him that this girl liked him. This pushed Ryan over the edge. On October 7, 2003, Ryan hung himself in his family bathroom.
