Building Block In Health And Social Care Essay

Neglect and abuse are societal norms in all corners of life. Most of the problems that arise from these are dealt with easily and permanently. Sadly many people cannot deal with, or even protect themselves from, these issues, specifically the elderly in care facilities. Neglect and abuse towards the elderly in retirement, nursing, and care facilities are not only social or political issues, but rather moral issues because they violate multiple Basic Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teachings. Of the building blocks, the most prominently violated are the Principle of Human Dignity, the Principle of Preferential Protection of the Poor and Vulnerable, and the Principle of Human Equality. These violations are seen in the neglect towards the elderly, the economic effect on the elderly, and the differential treatment based on age and health. The first basic building block most visibly violated in care facilities is the Principle of Human Dignity. This building block refers to the idea that all people, despite differences, deserve equal treatment. This concept also reflects the first principle given, that of human dignity, as it shows that all people deserve to be respected in the same way, all people deserve to be treated in the same way. This means that in care facilities, all residents, regardless of health, should be helped to reach a livable and happy life. Although, in many care facilities, those who need the most critical and often times tedious help are those who least receive it and those who need little help receive it regularly. These people that need more help usually have more health related problems and cannot reach a happy and livable life. These people are not treated
