Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Today in America we have many exotic species that are introduced into our environment. Some of these species have been introduced on purpose and others by mistake. Other species are introduced into our ecosystem to help control a pest and others are introduced because they make good game to hunt or fish. Species that are considered to be an invasive species are labeled that because they have potential to harm and can spread aggressively. Invasive species can come around in a multitude of ways. They could have been carried over on boats that brought the settlers to the new world. Insects can travel with wood products that travel all around the world. Ornamental plants that get out of control can grow into the wild and become invasive. Others are simply let loose like the python’s because they are too large to care for as pets anymore. This stink bug is native to China, Japan and those surrounding countries. It is not known how they came to be in America; although they suppose they hitched a ride in luggage and wood products. They have no natural predators here in the US and because of this their population has exploded. They have gotten to be a huge nuisance in people’s homes and the agriculture industry. American has approximately 250 native stink bug species but they are kept under control by their natural predators. The invasive stink bug is leaving damage on oriental trees, fruit crops, vegetable crops (especially green vegetables), and soybeans and corn. The bug is especially annoying when the temperatures start to fall because they find ways into the homes of people searching for warmer weather.
