Today we are gathered to remember Brother Bartolome Arrazola, and his righteous work as a conquistador. Although we are all still reeling from his untimely death, we must move forward to preserve his memory. Arrazola devoted his life to the redemption of the Mayans. We must never forget that those savages are the ones who took his life, and continue our work to save them from their sins, so we all can rejoice in or Holy Father’s creation. This being said, so many of them are beyond our help. We will do what we must to the others, those rejected by our Lord and Saviour.
Brother Bartolome Arrazola was a shining light sharing the Holy word of or Father with all. He died for this cause, and we must remember this as we carry his memory

The relationship between Christianity and how it shaped interactions between people from different parts of the world in the 1500s is a historically complex question and many conclusions can be drawn from it. Through the late 15th and early 16th centuries, European missionaries and colonizers greatly spread Catholic Christianity to the Americas and Africa. It is important to analyze why they did this why they felt such entitlement. Throughout history, it has been in the habit of the colonizers to believe they are inherently superior to the colonized. A very important issue resulted in a crisis of conscience in the 16th century Spanish Empire.…

While most Spaniards believed that the harsh treatment of the natives during the conquest of the Americas was necessary to accomplish the Spanish Imperial objectives in the region, there were many who opposed those treatments. Bartolomé de las Casas a Catholic priest, was the most eloquent critic of Spanish mistreatment of the New World’s native population (de las Casas, p.7). In his document, History of the Indies (1528), de las Casas aimed to inform the public back in Spain of the atrocities that occurred on the island of Hispaniola by Spanish “comendadors” and attempted to persuade them to stop such practices. When de las Casas arrived in the New World and in particular at the island of Hispaniola, present day Haiti, as a Christian missionary,…

While the idea that the arrival of Europeans to “The New World” brought upon the indigenous cultures of America no small amount of strife and misery, as well as fame and fortune upon the Spanish is widely accepted as fact, there is limitless dissention among historians about the true history of the conquest of “New Spain”. One event that exemplifies this dissention is that of the Siege of Tenochtitlan. In the following analysis I will describe and discuss two conflicting accounts that document this occasion (The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico and The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz). The accounts are conflicting in the way each author presents certain events of the siege and manipulates them to represent their…

In the late 18th and early 19th century many colonies in South America began wars against Spain in an effort to gain their independence. Eventually all of Latin America gained independence from Spain. Two key leaders in the liberation movements were Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin. After the creation of Republics Latin American politicians looked to the United States for support and guidance. Two such influential men were Domingo Sarmiento, President of Argentina, and Matias Romero, Mexican Ambassador to the United States.…

Christopher Columbus has always been a controversial topic. Some individuals believe he was a hero and founded the Great America at no one’s expense. On the other hand, some individuals believe that Christopher Columbus was a deleterious, inconsiderate, and clueless explorer. Was Columbus a thief and a murderer and should he have his own holiday, is the topic of theologian Dr. Tink Tinker and BBC producer Mark Freeland’s article, “Thief, Slave Trader, Murderer: Christopher Columbus and Caribbean Population Decline” (Tinker and Freeland, 2008, Pg.25). After deliberation and a close look at sources Tinker and Freeland argue that Columbus was a thief and murderer who should not be honored.…

When Pope Francis decided to canonize the Franciscan friar named Junipero Serra in September on the pope’s first to the United States, he knew that there would be controversy surrounding his decision. Father Serra was a friar who helped the Spanish mission in California settle and helped to convert the native population to Catholicism. However, the controversy comes from the way in which the friars and the missions went about converting the natives and the way in which they treated them is extremely controversial. Many native Californians were slaughtered and killed by the Spanish upon their arrival. Junipero Serra is one of the reasons for the collapse of the Native population in California, many believed that he treated the natives very…

The Declaration of the Indian Juan is written in the format of a Spanish author documenting his exchange with a Pueblo, “Indian Juan,” that chronicles the Pueblo experience of the Pueblo Rebellion. The author is unknown, but presumably is a former Spanish leader or resident of the Pueblo area. They are likely documenting this conversation for the consumption of others displaced from that area or to the Spanish back home. It is clearly not intended for a Native American audience due to the lengthy explanation of the fear of El Pope that would not have been needed for other Pueblo Indians.…

Both the short story “The Possibility of Evil” (1965), written by Shirley Jackson, and the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” (1846), written by Edgar Allan Poe, explore the themes of revenge by using a variety of techniques. “The Possibility of Evil” tells the story of an elderly woman manipulating the the town to be the perfect town she wanted, and when when one of the townspeople find out what she had been doing, they cut up her number one prize possession; her roses. “The Cask of Amontillado” also conveys a similar theme, telling the story of a man that had enough of “his friend” teasing him, so he commits first degree murder by getting his friend drunk and luring him to his chamber and locking him in there until his death. Both narratives…

Consider the role of the narrator in both Benito Cereno and Bartleby. Follow your leader – three words that echo through both of these texts and symbolise Melville’s role as a narrator in distinct ways. His narrative diction in Benito Cereno and Bartleby is mechanically impressive but speaks volumes as to how he felt in relation to the new capitalist society America was rapidly evolving into and the problem of slavery to which the old America was clinging to. In these texts the lawyer in Bartleby and Captain Delano in Benito Cereno are both so blinded by pre-conceived notions which have been hammered into them by society that they are blatantly unaware of the reality that is staring them in the face. They have become so accustomed to following…
