1.1 The following factors may cause barriers to learning in the education system:
• The Infrastructure, facilities and resources.
The lack of infrastructure of schools, no facilities and resources available to the school and children can have a big impact of the young child, that may cause barriers to learning.
• Leadership, management and administration.
No control or management or a lack of finances can cause barriers to earning in the education system
• Fractured and adversarial relationships between principals, teachers, students and parents.

Bronfenbrenner works on a five system level:
1. Microsystems – the system closes to the person and the one in which they have direct contact. For example, home and school. This includes one’s family, friends or caregivers.
2. Mesosystem – the interaction between the different parts of a person’s microsystem. For example, the relationship between the parent and the teacher.
3. Exosystem – a setting that does not involve the person as an active participant, but still affects them. For example, when a parent loses his job at work.
4. Macrosystem – this includes the social and cultural ideologies and beliefs that affect an individual’s environment.
5. Chronosystem: the environmental events and transition that occur throughout a child’s life.

As well as if their teacher does not do a proper job such as teaching without reflecting whether the children understood what was being taught is also a barrier to learning. This refers to Bronfenbrenner’s theory of mesosystem.
When a parent loses his or her job or is in a financial difficulty it might not involve the child directly but it affects the child may cause a barrier to learning because the parents won’t be by the means to give the child his or her best but at least the basic needs of a child. With regard to neighbours if the child resides in a poor area or lives next to a shebeen where people are drinking and making a noise the child will not be able to focus on their school work when it needs to be done at home because of their surroundings such as the constant noise, screaming and fighting going on in their environment the child’s focus will be shifted and this also creates a barrier to learning.
