Migration is just one of the eight elements that made up globalization, but she thought migration would be important to discuss first because in the economic class she was teaching all the students were immigrants who were also English language learners (ELLS). Sokolower was making the effort to make what she was teaching relevant to her students. Though there were some obstacles that she had to overcome. For instance, she had to take into account that not everyone in her class come from the same economic background. There were some student who came from counties facing economic despair while others were from a more privileged upbringing. Also the economic textbook made to help ELLS was subpar and underestimated the ELLS ability to think critically about the subject there learning. The textbooks were probably made this way because of people belief that not understanding English equals a lack of knowledge. Instead of using the textbook given to her Sokolower decided to use the material she wanted to use and just make accommodation for the students the ways she saw fit. What really seem to cause the students to connect to globalization was when Sokolower allowed to talk about what migration was like for them and even allowed them to bring in their families into the discussion. Without validation student will feel as if their culture is not worth learning about and that their experiences are not the norm. What a student experiences at home is a part of that students learning. There are many ways to make coursework relatable to all students, but it sometimes means teacher will have to really interact with parents especially if the parent is from a different culture then them. Also letting students share their experiences opens door to dialogue between the students and the teacher. When teachers take the steps to make the curriculum inclusive of all students to create harmony between the different cultures found in today’s classrooms.
