The conflict of prioritizing sports before school is a prominent issue in the book Whale Talk as it is in the real world, specifically on the men’s UConn basketball team. T.J. refuses to participate in school athletic teams because he hates the fact that athletes are granted special privileges because of their positions on a team. Crutcher shows T.J.’s dislike for the school's athletic department when he says, “Cutter is such a jock school. They pray before games and cajole you to play out of obligation, and fans scream obscenities…

The Backfield Package by Thomas J. Dygard is a fiction sports story about a football team that has a chance to win the Rend Lake Conference championship in back to back seasons. The story mainly focuses on four players Joe Mitchell the quarterback, Tracy Jackson a wide receiver, Coley Brewster a running back, and Lew Preston the fullback and where these players will decide to go to college to play football at. The time that this story goes on is unknown, but I would assume that the time is sometime in the nineties or pretty close to there.
