They examined the results of 1,295 individuals who were not married but had a romantic relationship with individuals of the opposite sex. They recruited participants by calling their homes. They were able to get such information from a sampling list which was received from subscriptions, magazines, ads, public records, etc. To qualify individuals had to: fall between the ages of eighteen to twenty five, have been unmarried, in a relationship with the opposite sex and for more than two months. 63% of the participants were females and 37% were males. They sent out surveys every four months. To measure psychological distress, they chose 12 questions from Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire using a scale from one (not at all) to five (extremely). Higher scores signified there was higher distress. To measure life satisfaction, they chose the 5 Item Satisfaction using a Life Scale. The scale ranged from one (strongly disagree) to seven (strongly agree). Higher scores signified higher life
