In the novel “Brave New World”, Aldous Huxley uses many different passages to reveal the symbolism of soma, the clothing & Henry T. Ford, and lastly the character of Bernard Max.
Throughout the novel Huxley uses soma to symbolize control and conformity, and makes it clear that soma is a necessity to the society. It is used to keep people calm and acting in a calm, controlled way. If no one is angry, then there are no problems in the society, and so they give them soma to control their emotions, and anger. Such as when Lenina and Bernard were walking together, Bernard was talking to Lenina about how he feels and likes himself as an individual person. Which then Lenina responds back saying, “I don't understand anything," she said with decision, determined to preserve her incomprehension intact. "Nothing. Least of all," she continued in another tone "Why you don't take soma when you have these dreadful ideas of yours. You'd forget all about them. And instead of feeling miserable, you'd be jolly. Ford to symbolize god. The society of Brave New World is built on the idea of transportation vs. humans and efficiency is important. They elevated Henry Ford into the position of God. Ford is a God because he is modern and has applied the principles of science and machinery to life which adds to the happiness of humankind in the society. In the novel it says "All crosses had their tops cut and became T's. There was also a thing called Go,” (Huxley 45). This passage proves that Ford is another word used instead of god. This demonstrates that even at the level of casual conversation and habit, religion has been replaced by the appreciation for technology which is what Henry Ford made. The passage is talking about how when you cut the top part off a cross representing Jesus, it changes to a ‘T’ showing that the society uses Ford of ‘T’ instead of
