The Border 2020 project will effectively improve air quality, provide clean, safe drinking water to residents, reduce waste, and prepare both the U.S and Mexico for environmental response, and stewardship. The Border 2020 project was created under the La Paz (The Peace) agreement in 1983 . Building off the border 2012 project, the latest edition will break into a two year plan, conquering each goal. The E.P.A and SEMARNAT, as well as other local governments, encourage the community to be actively involved.
Project responsibilities are broken down into 3 networks. The first network being the Regional Workgroups. In part, four regions of each country are designated to the following states; Arizona-senora, California-Baja California, New Mexico-Texas-Chihuahua and lastly, Coahuila -Nuevo Leon- Tamaulipas . Each regional work group is given tasks based on their environment, as well as, the amount of environmental damage. “Policy Fora” is the second network, designated in delegating realistic goals to so said regions. Policy Fora oversees the Air, Water, Material Management, cleaning sites, Preparedness and response in emergency situations, along with, cooperative enforcement and compliance in regards to each given region . Approximately five hundred miles along the Texas-New Mexico- Chihuahua boundary. “ This region is a part of the Chihuahua Desert ecosystem that primarily comprises of arid to semi-arid biotic communities and is home to the second largest metropolitan area along the U.S.-Mexico Border known as the Paso del Norte region.” Housing more than two million people. The Paso del Norte region spreads across three states, twenty-nine municipos along the Mexican side of the border, with a total of one hundred-sixty-eight American cities and towns. Further, dividing themselves into three priority based geographical taskforces. some of the common elements include; access to health care, cancer (with reduction), Diabetes, environmental health, HIV/ Aids, immunization and infectious diseases, maternal, infant and child health, mental health, oral health and lastly respiratory health. The substantial amount of health defects in the bordering states of Mexico comes to no surprise. The level of pollution, non-access to health clinics and overall living quality-in comparison to the U.S.A- is unrealistically low. Thus, resulting in severe amounts of health defects. The Border 2020 project, in its success, will significantly decrease the amount of illness due to poor air, water and overall environmental cleanliness. How can we contribute?
