As media coordinators, we are expected and excited to help students identify with themselves and with situations in the books they read. Often, we are able to recommend books to help students during times when they are experiencing social or emotional problems. In addition, teachers often search for books so that students can identify and relate with their own situations, or empathize with others who are experiencing problems.

It would be ideal to have a section of the library that would house these types of “helping” books. This section and the designated books would be called “Books for Life”. Books that address emotional and social issues would be cataloged in a manner that identifies it as a “Books for Life” book. The book’s description and searchable terms would be listed so that the subject addressed is identified, such as divorce, deployment, bullying, etc. This section would be accessible to all students and teachers. A list of these books would be made public in Destiny for easy identification.

Books in the “Books for Life” section, would be identified in Destiny for age appropriateness. All students in grades K-5 and teachers would have access to the designated collection. If possible, a book that targets each age group K-2 and 3-5, for each subject addressed would be a part of the collection. Books that address sensitive subjects that may not be

The school counselor and the media coordinator, would be able to identify books that could serve small groups. In all honesty, if one of the members of my freshman class were to ask me for a book recommendation next year, I’ll admit that I’d have trouble deciding what to recommend. At first I’d be worried about which route I should go: gratifying young adult romance novels or something thought-provoking that would impact them, and perhaps, change them for the better? Then, I would realize that I can choose both. With that, I would recommend Oscar Wilde’s The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray, Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and Kurt Vonnegut’s…

Some of the books also contain some of the essential questions that I have found interesting. This year in english class we read Night by Elie Wiesel and the novel contains the essential question of seeking justice and bearing witness about terrible things that have happened like the holocaust and to promote what happened so the act can be prevented from ever happening again. We also read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee which contains the essential questions of core and moral beliefs.…

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a dystopian novel that takes the reader on a journey through a future world where books are illegal. The novel outlines the fact that books are important to civilization in many ways, whether it be content, characters, themes, or any important historical foundation that books contain. At the end of the book, the main character, Guy Montag, grabs a few books to save from the firemen, and finds himself amongst a group of homeless book lovers who each have books, or portions of books, memorized where they are safe from the hands of firemen and the government. With the idea of being in Montag’s place and having a choice of which books I would save, I would have chosen The Color Purple, The Wind in the Willows, and The Life of Pi, each for their own unique qualities that would be valuable for future civilizations for historical reference. Rich with gender and racial history, The Color Purple by Alice Walker exemplifies what life was like in the early 1900s for southern African American women.…
