Distinguishing traits of the author: He was born in Pastura, New Mexico but actually raised in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Similar to Antonio in Bless Me, Ultima his father was a vaquero while his mother came from a family of farmers. Later in his life he received not only a B.A. in English and American Literature but also two masters’ degrees from the University of Mexico. Anaya actually began writing Bless Me, Ultima in 1963 although it wasn’t published till 1972 due to struggles and controversy of its publishment due to its use of English

An elderly woman named Ultima comes to live with him and his family, but she isn’t any ordinary woman. Ultima is a magical curandera. His parents constantly bickering due to their different roots and future aspirations for themselves and their children, take her in to house her due to her elderly and helpless nature. Antonio’s mother, who comes from farmers and a devout Catholic family, wishes for him to become a priest while Antonio’s father, who comes from vaqueros, wishes for him to be a wandering man of the llano. Antonio spends a lot of time with Ultima learning her peculiar ways and mystical healing processes. One night he witnesses the death of Lupito, a mentally unstable war soldier. After witnessing the death of this man and the vicious behavior of the town mob he realizes he’s beginning to lose his innocence. When Antonio finally begins school his brothers return bringing the joy back to his father, due to the resurrection of his potential dream of moving to California. Unfortunately, the brothers were changed during the war and no longer wished to fulfill their father’s wishes. Antonio’s faith continues to be tested as he witnesses Ultima cast out demons from a haunted house. He then witnesses the death of his beloved friend, Florence, who drowned in a nearby river as they were playing one afternoon. It is decided that Antonio must get away for a short while and live on the farm with his uncles. Upon his return he is chased by Tenorio escaping only to find that he had killed Ultima’s owl, otherwise known as her spirit. Tenorio is shot but with the death of the owl came the death of dear
