    * This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review I'm sad to say that this is my first 3 star rating for a CoHo book. After falling in love with It Ends With Us, and crying for days after it was over, I was excited and nervous to read yet another emotional Colleen Hoover book. Without Merit didn't have much of a description, so needless to say I was going into this book pretty blindly. Once I finished the 1st chapter, I was already hit with some crazy news, which ultimately led into a story that I was not expecting.…

Anne Dillard’s “The Death of a Moth” is a representation of her view on death. Dillard puts the reader in her shoes when she explains the settings and events that go on around her. Anne Dillard lived a single life with her two cats which were yellow and black. Dillard first opens the reader to a single crustacean, the spider, which she says is intelligent because he is somehow managing to survive as opposed to the bugs that become trapped in its spider’s web under the toilet. Eventually, Dillard comes across multiple corpses on the floor, however, one particular corpse catches her eye.…

Also in “The Death of a Moth,” Dillard not only continues to use the symbolism of candles throughout the narrative, she also mentions the number of candles or wicks numerically throughout her writing. When on the mountains, Dillard first only refers to “the candle” (7) when the moth begins burning from its flame. Later on, the author writes that the candle the moth continues to fuel “had two wicks, two flames of identical light, side by side” (8). At the very end, Dillard writes “I have three candles here on the table which I disentangle from the plants and light when visitors come” (10). This deliberate use of numbers that are in numerical order throughout the essay seem to suggest progression for the author. This most likely signifies the…

Inspirational, uplifting, and informational are three words I choose to describe the memoir: Becoming Ms. Burton wrote by Cari Lynn and Susan Burton. It’s not every day you get the chance to read a book that is able to enhance your own perspective on life, but Ms. Burton’s book did just that. The story, Ms. Burton’s story, give reader’s a major glimpse into the life of a woman suffering from her unearned disadvantages and the consequences that are tied to those disadvantages. The beginning of the story starts with Susan, Ms. Burton’s former self, and takes the reader’s on a journey through Susan’s life full of hardships from growing up in a crime-ridden neighborhood, to her introduction to crack cocaine. As the book moves forward, Susan’s story evolves into a bigger story that is connected to multiple social problems such as poverty, abuse, and racial discrimination in the justice system.…

The infamous old court house still stands, and the locals of Monroeville can still remember the eerie house that once resembled the chilling tale of the Radley house in Harper Lee 's prize winning work To Kill A Mockingbird (Wilson, Mike 2010). Author Harper Lee allows her readers to not only encounter a perspective of living in the imaginary town of Maycomb, but also gives the readers a view of her own childhood back in the 1930s. She uses her experiences and connects them through the main characters, Scout Finch, Atticus Finch, and Tom Robinson. Her life impacts the novel’s setting of Monroeville County that was during The Great Depression, and the themes presented of social prejudice, racial injustice, and the loss of innocence as children…
