I’m sorry to hear about your experience with a male friend getting arrested for rape. I can somewhat relate. My childhood friend (male) went to prison for molesting his very young step daughters. I think the difference is that he was a friend growing up but we lost touch out of high school. In your case, you seemed close and his crime also leads to mistrust and a rightful sense of betrayal. I hope you don’t mistrust yourself for not knowing his capabilities. Rapists, pedophiles, and in some cases murders are not always obvious or detectable to anyone, including those who are close to them. It absolutely makes sense why his actions would affect you in the way that it did.
In response to body image and Photoshop, I agree with your comments. I

Depression, guilt, shame, fear, anxiety and interpersonal difficulties have been found to be present in survivors beyond one year after the rape (Cohen & Roth, 1987; Resick, 1983). Crisis theorists (Burgess & Holstrom, 1974; Sutherland & Schurl, 1970) have provided a model by which the emotional sequelae of rape can be better understood. However, crisis theory models are limited because they compartmentalize the aftermath of rape into phases and the actual experience of being raped can be lost (Fischer,…

Whether or not to label a juvenile as a sex offender is not an easy question to answer. Many states treat juveniles differently than adults, Edwards (n.d.) stated: With a steadfast focus on rehabilitation and confidentiality, the justice system has sought to preserve the premise that juvenile offenders are not miniature adults. But Edwards goes on to say: Yet, when a juvenile is adjudicated on a sex offense, Oregon makes no meaningful distinction between an adult and juvenile offender therefore juveniles must register on the same list as adults. According to Siegel & Welsh (2015), if juveniles are deemed delinquents then they are labeled as sex offenders and may have to register as such after their release (p. 176).…

Adolescence is a challenging time for the majority of American youth. Between the hormonal changes faced during puberty and the transition from dependence on parents to emerging independence, it is no surprise that adolescence can be a frustrating time. My own adolescence was not particularly easy, and from the viewpoint of a developmental psychologist, it seems many troubles I faced growing up could have been predicted without difficulty. By using the developmental theories of Erik Erikson in combination with an analysis of my family dynamic and the challenges presented by body image dissatisfaction, I will take a profound look at my adolescence from a developmental-psychological perspective. I was raised by a single mother from the age…

    Sexual Assault Definition

    • 6 Pages

The term “Sexual Assault” can be interpreted in many different ways. No two cases of sexual assault are identical, which makes defining and classifying sexual assaults difficult. Victims of sexual assault report the crime to the authorities, but the range of severity and variety of cases make it tough to prove that the perpetrator is guilty. Sexual assault is defined as a “sexual act against a person’s will or in a circumstance where the person is either unable to give consent due to age, illness, or physical/mental impairment or who is unable to refuse due to physical assault or threats” (Krivoshey et al., 2013, p. 142). Within the definition there are three important circumstances that help to classify each sexual assault: consent, unable…

Prison violence has become seen more often than it was in the past. The inmates have formed gangs and use this as a means to target others without taking all the blame on their own. People believe that they could never be a victim of sexual assault, but that just is not reality in today’s society. One in every five women have been a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime, and 1.6 million men will also be victims. However, many victims are unable to get the justice they need in pursuing a case such as rape because out of every 1,000 cases, 994 of the perpetrators will walk free (“Statistics”). This means that the United States has thousands of sexual assault criminals walking around the streets, not mentioning the possibility of them attacking again. However, rape does not just stop after the act is done; it lives on in the victim’s brain for the rest of their life.…
