Body Image Issues

In 2015, a British psychiatric study (which studies body image in 6,000 children until they reached the age of 14) found that body discontent for both boys and girls can take hold as early as age eight (Johnson). It is sufficient to say that body image issues are a big problem. Fortunately, there are truly successful methods of managing self esteem and body image issues, and psychological help is key. This concerns everyone, as everyone had dealt with negative thoughts about themselves before, but primarily concerns teens seeing as how they have the most pressure on them to be accepted by society and conform. In 1998, a poll was conducted which found that in 5th through 12th grade, 47% of females reported they wanted to lose weight because …show more content…
Not only that, but nearly a quarter of them would seriously consider undergoing plastic surgery. This alone should be enough to convince someone that if they feel negatively about themselves in some way, they are definitely not alone. Many people, girls and boys alike, suffer from some form of negative body image, although it tends to affect males to a lesser extent than females because of the beauty standards girls feel they must live up to. For example, 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough in some manner including their physical appearance, performance in school and/or relationships (Armstrong). The first step, as cheesy as it may seem, is learning to accept and love yourself. If you can recognize that everyone is unique and that it is unhealthy for you to think that way about yourself, then you should be able to muster enough willpower to fight through. Some examples of people to support you could be your parents, your friends, your co-workers, et cetera. Finally, getting psychological help. Set up an appointment to go in and talk to a therapist about your problems, and they will try their best to help you work through your issue (Teen Health and Wellness). However, think on this: Could you go up to someone right now, anyone really, and list all of their faults directly to them? Could you go up to someone you may or may not have spoken to before and tell them that their nose is too crooked, their teeth too yellowed, or their skin too blemished, or would you even notice to begin with? Chances are not. Well then, why would you do this to

Body image issues — issues involving the ways we perceive our physical appearance — have become a major area of concern in the twenty-first century, particularly for pre-adolescent and adolescent girls. In a society that focuses much of its attention on looks, many young girls feel dissatisfied with their bodies, often resorting to methods of dieting in order to appear slimmer. It is largely believed that the media is the main contributor to young girls’ body dissatisfaction, due to its tendency to label thin figures as “ideal” and larger figures as “unflattering” or simply unhealthy, however, research…

In today’s society, people have a sick obsession over appearance, aggressively attempting to change their look to conform to today’s society, with some taking extreme lengths to achieve that goal. Society’s obsession with looks is further agitated by TV shows that showcase plastic surgery being done on teens to look like celebrities (BLUM 842). It should never be acceptable to showcase obsessions that could promote the same in other people, because everyone should accept the way they look. Unfortunately high school students also have insecurities themselves, to the point where some students take steroids to try to improve their body image (PETROCELLI 793). Our society today promotes a sick mindset, where students are left vulnerable and susceptible…

It is not unusual to have scantily clad human beings, hidden-but-still-obvious sexual messages, or even a human in the bare flesh presented in modern media. Sexualization can be simply defined as the sexualizing of an object – or making something sexually appealing. This current wave of sexualization in common media has led to some very mixed responses. There is the business side of things that sees a marketing technique that successfully catches attention – and, of course, there are the people who just like it. But the other side of the issue finds the sexualization of people, of women in particular, inappropriate and dangerous.…

When I was twelve years old, my neighbour told me the only way I’d ever be beautiful would be if I started wearing makeup. It wasn’t uncommon for me to hear this- since about the age of nine, individuals had been telling me to dress better, fix my hair, and start shopping at more fashionable stores. Makeup was simply the newest weapon they could hurl at me, the best way for them to tell me that I did not conform to their standards of beauty. They hid insults within their helpful suggestions like one hides a knife within a cake, covering up their nasty commentary with flowery words and silky tongues.…
