They use their blowhole to breath. A blowhole is controlled by a muscle in their body. When it closes it lets in no water so they can hold their breath longer. For them it’s like a nostril. Whales don’t blow water from their blowhole. Sometimes when they need to breath they only have to barely break the surface of the water. No whale has the same blowhole some have heart shaped ones, bushy shaped ones, and column shaped ones. If you see a whale shot water out its blowhole it’s actually just cold breath.
