Some of Blanche’s coping mechanisms may not seem normal to some people. The first one is drinking; now it is not so strange to some people. As you go through the story you find her other coping mechanisms, like bathing. Blanche’s other way to get out of realty and calm herself is to take a long bath, and she takes a lot of them. The one big mechanism she uses that is defiantly not normal, especially for her age is that she basically plays dress up. After she grew up Stella met Stanly and left Bella Rev, but Blanch never left and has never had the opportunity to adapt to the different living styles as people in New Orleans have. At the beginning, it is very clear that Blanch does not like Stanly; she referred to him as a “Polack” many times throughout the book. The feeling is the some though, since Stanly does not care for Blanch either. Soon after Blanch’s arrival, Stanly went right into investigating her. During the book we hear about Blanch’s past relationship when she is talking to a man that she wants to be in a relationship with, Mitch. While there Stella and Stanley’s relationship started going downhill because of all the stress and ager he had because Blanch was
