Across the US, over 211,000 homicides committed since 1980 remain unsolved. The murder of Elizabeth Short, well known as the Black Dahlia, is one of LA’s most famous unsolved murders. She moved from Massachusetts in hopes of undertaking an acting career. Her body was found in an abandoned lot by Leimert Park. Nobody was ever found guilty of committing the crime and the case of the Black Dahlia remains unsolved. The murder mystery of the Black Dahlia narrows down to two popular theories: George Hodel was the killer, or George Knowlton was the killer.

Knowlton was known to be violent. In 1991, Janice Knowlton, daughter of George Knowlton, claimed that her father killed Elizabeth Short, as well as two other women. (Who Killed the Black Dahlia?). Helena Katz, author of Cold Cases: Famous Unsolved Crimes, Mysteries, and Disappearances in America, wrote, “She claimed that Short was one of her father’s victims. She came up with circumstantial links from her father to a string of unsolved murders across the U.S. from the family home in Massachusetts to California. Her relatives supported her claims that Knowlton was a violent man who had bragged about having committed murders for which he was not caught” (Katz 6). Likewise, Janice’s restrained memories say that George Knowlton picked Elizabeth Short up from the Biltmore Hotel and was brought back to his garage area where she was sick. After she was feeling better, she wanted to leave and start her film career. George was angry and the remaining details given by Janice show that Knowlton was the killer (Merken 2). Lastly, according to Janice, her father lived close to Short’s old high school in Massachusetts. She believes that the Black Dahlia and George Knowlton may have crossed paths on her way to California (Merken 2).
