It determines upon what illness or disability it is/was, and/or how a person(s) dealt with an illness or disability mentally, emotionally, and physically. It can take a troll on the family making them vulnerable to the CID, and/or seek help. However, in my opinion, there is a possibility. When there is a balance within a family after an illness or disability, psychological adaptation is taking place. Psychological adaptation, individuals “responding to the functional, psychological, and social changes” cause by an illness or disability (Marini & Stebnicki, 2013, p. 180). Families psychologically adapt to an illness or disability in their way by not having the CID affect them no more than it should when known from the beginning. They are aware of information, facts, and resources that can bring them peace again in their family. Their psychological adaptation of a CID would push them to another step in overcoming a CID, and working together to fight a CID. The sibling should seek out information about the CIDs him/her grandparents currently has. The information that is learned will help in knowing how to deal with the symptoms of the grandparents CID. It would be helpful for the sibling to channel him/her emotions, and develop coping techniques for the sibling, and grandparents. When learning about those CID, research in their family background will be helpful in knowing if it can be inherited. Also, if possible, learning information about their family medical history. Some type of support should be accessible for the grandparent’s CID, and for the sibling as well. Resources are beneficial for them in being able to handle situations for each person.
