Born on May 21, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York, Smalls lived alone with his mother shortly after his father deserted his family. His mother worked two jobs to pay for him to attend a private school. He was a good student, very smart but he just hung out with the wrong people. After switching schools his mom said that his attitude had changed. Discovered through a magazine article in The Sources by rapper Sean Combs known as “Diddy”. Before being signed to a label he worked on projects while at Uptown Records. He was signed mid 1992 to Bad Boy Records and released his first album September 13,1994, “Ready to Die”. What made him so special was that he would write rhymes, but never recited them. Whenever he got in a studio it was purely off the top of his head. After he released his album and he acquired his fame, he made his own label.
His album went platinum four times, which was important for East Coast Rap. Biggie was named Lyricist of the Year, Live Performer of the Year, Best New Solo Artist, and Album of the year. Towards his later years of fame he became known through the rivalry between him and Tupac Shakur. It became known as West Coast versus East Coast. This led to both the death or Tupac and the death of Biggie. They were once friends but that quickly faded once the labels they were signed to started
