Big Time Reflection

The book “The Big Time” was written by Tim Green centered towards a younger audience and written as a sports fiction book. The protagonist, Troy, a young football standout who’s life is absorbed in football, in the most basic level, and even on the most extreme level in the NFL. He has a mind unlike any other kid his age or adult for that matter. He has the ability to read the offensive patterns set during a game before the play even begins. As he examines the formation and he sees how the linemen are set, he can predict the play, and is almost always perfect in his predictions. He knows whether it will be a passing play or running play,as well as which direction of the field the ball will be moving. This sets him apart from everybody else …show more content…
He did not know what his dad was capable of, or did not know how he made his wealth, if he was an honest man or not. Troy could have been fooled by his dad if it wasn’t for his mom keeping his conscience clear and straightforward. The lessons demostrated in the novel by Troy, the football genius, are trust, honesty, and communication. It is important to have all three of these while going through life and the author Tim Green does an excellent job of creating a compelling story for young people who could compare the situation to their own life. In his novel he doesn’t just give the example, he follows up with a why and a how, being completely clear on not just the basic lessons, but how those lessons can be applied to real world situations. He has the ability to get a strong point across to young readers in all of his sports novels. Green even appeals to non-sport loving audiences just because of the fantasy and lessons taught in his novels. Troy proceeds to trust his father in the novel, when his mom tried warning him not to, disobeying her wishes when she knew way more then Troy about his father and the situation they were placed …show more content…
His mom has cared for him his whole life, being a mother for so long she knows what is best for him and what he needs to do to thrive emotionally and mentally. In the end, Troy trusting his father came back to harm him emotionally. This book kept my all around interest because the idea of fantasy and my interest in football made me want to continue reading to find out how the story unfolded.. The book was written in an exciting style, and it was on a topic I enjoy a lot and am surrounded by every day. I can relate to the novel because I pay attention to football, and my favorite team is the Eagles. It taught good life lessons for his readers to go by, and that made me respect it and enjoy it even

Sports stories are told in many ways with different views of how they come to be. This can be seen in both Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger and in Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy. Both of these books compare and contrast each other in ideas and principles when it comes to football at different levels. Bissinger and Dungy both examine how football is seen differently by people and how football leads to bigger impacts made in society throughout Friday Night Lights and Quiet Strength.…

Over the past year in GSW I have learned more for me to become be better writer. This course 1120 has shown me that I have improved from the last semester. With this semester the essays have helped me with the idea of being a little more open-minded and light in my essays just so I don’t offend people when they read my work. I think that I should pass GSW 1120 for the way that I have learned and improved more than first semester or the beginning of this semester. I attended the “Do You Matter” public speaking event presented by Erick Chavez & Andrea Rascon. This interactive session was to allow participants to explore their privilege and identify how they can use their privilege to advocate for others. Erick gains attention in his introduction by addressing the agenda of the event and provides a coherent design of the presentation. He resumes his presentation with acknowledging community guidelines, such as “… respect, “I”-statements, one voice all ears, [and] confidentiality.” He spoke extemporaneously, mostly speaking from a manuscript.…

I have mixed feelings on how to react to Wolters’ writing. Wolters takes what may seem like something that all reformational Christians should already know and reinforces this classical worldview in a useful way. The musings of Wolters have been the integral backbone of my entire educational experience over my years at Dordt. However, I have never been formally introduced to these concepts before starting college. This may be obvious to anyone who knows me, but up until a couple of years ago, I had never heard of the terms, “reformational,” “worldview,” “structure and direction,” or even “creation, fall, redemption.…

Journal #7: Reframing When I came across the topic of reframing in this week’s readings, I immediately thought of myself, and the way I tend to handle difficult and/or stressful situations. Unfortunately, when something doesn’t go my way, I tend to become irritated and ask myself why I have such bad luck. Recently, however, I have noticed myself reframing issues, even when I had never heard of this as a topic before reading chapter 10. For instance, in the beginning of the school year at USC, I was denied a waiver for the USC health insurance plan, which ended up costing me $600. I was initially pretty angry that I would have to pay this amount, because I did have insurance, just not insurance that qualified to allow me to obtain a waiver.…

    3. Systematic Reflection: The clearest systemic social forces at play in this case are racism and classism. I do not wish to highlight either of these as judgments on the congregation. They are, in my mind, a natural byproduct of a diverse community that came of age in an era unaccustomed to systemic reflection. On more than one occasion conversation has turned to “the Indians” who are just “waiting for us to close this church so they can get the land.”…
