A study has been done to evaluate interproximal gingivitis with the use of a mouthrinse in addition to brushing and flossing in comparison to brushing and flossing alone. This study showed a 15.8% reduction with the use of mouthrinse, while the control group only experienced a 7.7% reduction (“Therapeutic mouthrinses,” 2011, p.…
Oral Microbiome 10: Reflection 3 One a daily basis the human mouth can come in contact with many different materials and organisms. “The human mouth is home to billions of individual microorganisms, including viruses, protozoa, fungi, archaea, and bacteria” (University of Minnesota Department of Biology Teaching and Learning, 2016, p. 21). In specific, during this lab we are looking at Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacilli. In studies, it has been shown that yogurt has helped reduced the amounts of bacteria present in a person’s mouth (Cildir et al., 2009). This could mean that other types of food, maybe even food related to yogurt such as dairy, could help reduce the amount of bacteria present as well.…

Purpose- By completing this lab I had hoped to accomplish finding out which gum brand gives you the best flavor. I was testing the price of gum compared to how long the flavor lasted, I thought that the more expensive the gum was the longer the flavor would last because when you buy a more expensive product it tends to be better quality as with shirts, so I thought the same would go for gum flavor. Hypothesis-…
If we test the length of flavors in Extra gum and Eclipse gum at the same chewing speed, then the Extra gum will last the longest lasting flavor. The Extra gum package claims to have long lasting flavor so we trust it will last the longest. Experimental Design: Equipment: 3 pieces of Eclipse gum, 3 pieces of Extra gum,…
The ancient Greeks had begun putting wads of mastic tree resin in their mouth to sweeten their breath. Bad breath can be caused by many things. The most common reason is food debris and dental plaque that remain in the mouth after having a meal. Chewing gum can be a quick way to reduce the bad…
Our hypothesis was supported because the brand claiming to be sugar free had the lowest rate of decomposition. Double Bubble brand gum had the highest starting amount of sugar and therefore lost the greatest amount of mass. Super Bubble lost a relatively similar amount of mass compared to the Double Bubble brand. Both brands on average lost over half of their mass after three minutes. Extra brand gum lost only one third of its mass after a three minute trial proving that it in fact had less sugar for saliva to decompose.…
Today companies have seen an increase in demand for sugar- free gum and believe it or not, there is now a market for chicle gum, which is all natural. “Simply Gum and Glee Gum are both natural gums, which have gained popularity with consumers who want, increasingly, to avoid artificial colors, flavor, sweeteners, and preservatives” (Watt). Gum also might be continuously chewed because of the positive benefits it has on us. “Many people find that gum chewing helps increase concentration and relieve boredom. In addition, studies have shown that gum chewing helps people relax”(chewing gum).…

Both the act of chewing and the flavor of the artificial sweeteners in the gum stimulate ten times the normal rate of saliva flow. Having more saliva, helps to neutralize stomach acid acid and keep your teeth healthy. Gum chewing also encourages frequent swallowing, which clears irritating acid from the esophagus more quickly. Not only does this increased saliva flow, but it also neutralizes the acids in your mouth. It also washes away food particles, helping to keep your teeth…
I found this topic interesting because teachers are usually against chewing gum in the classroom and saying that it is distracting. My goal for this experiment is to prove that chewing gum helps with concentration and to get teachers to allow kids to chew gum during tests and quizzes. All of the research I was able to obtain completely supports my hypothesis. Each of my sources suggest that chewing gum makes a difference. Chewing gum is good for the brain and can boost alertness by 10%.…

The chewing tobacco they chewed on was a mixture of plants from their environment, but was later replaced by the tobacco leaf. It was then used by the cowboys in the 1800’s, and that is when it became branded. These name brands include Red Man, Copenhagen, Skoal, Big Chief and countless more. Going to the dentist can be the most terrifying thing for some people. Many studies have proven that people would rather take the pain of gum disease ,or even a broken tooth rather than stepping into a dental office. The noisy tools, scary instruments, and the thought of the dentist drilling into the teeth doesn’t make it any better. Dental anxiety and phobia are very common today; it is estimated that about 9-15 percent of Americans fear the dentist. Regardless of the fear and anxiety accompanied by visiting the dentist, many are aware of the importance and the impact it has on living healthily.…
