What is a true hero? Someone who slays dragons and beasts? Or just someone who people admire and respect? Although people can argue and debate over what a hero is, classic literature can often define what it means to be a true hero. In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf is not only strong and brave, but honest and generous also.…
An epic hero is a human who is seen as a larger than life character. The heroes portray talents and intelligence that are far more advanced than any other human of that time. In Anglo- Saxon poems the skills most epic heroes are given contain strength, loyalty, and courage. In the past centuries, when a human being uses these abilities to complete quests or daily life activities, they are seen as an epic hero.…
Modern heroes are comparable to heroes of the past. The hero of the Geats, Beowulf, confirms this when compared to his present-day equivalents. Throughout his grand adventures and fierce battles, the number of noticeable similarities is staggering. Beowulf : The Most Glorious Hero of all Time In the epic poem Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf completes many heroic and glorious actions allowing him to earn eternal life. The first indication of Beowulf achieving his goal of eternal life is through glory to one’s king. From achieving glory from one’s king, the kin of the clan will most likely begin to speak of this glory that was achieved ; thus, creating eternal life.…
Beowulf is an action-packed Anglo-Saxon folk epic which focuses on a central character named Beowulf. In the past, this folk epic was recited as entertainment and passed down orally through numerous generations (just like other folk epics). As time passed and as the epic was retold by more people, it grew in length and included even more adventures and battles. In fact, two completely new parts were added on to Beowulf after Beowulf defeated Grendel. Just as a tragedy requires a tragic hero, an epic requires an epic hero.…

Large, Ugly, and Frightening are not only words to illustrate a monster or a villain, but how they portray their actions makes them who they are. Every monster or villain has a choice to choose good or evil. Usually when monsters choose evil or go down the path of destruction, they end up dead or on the losing side. Everyone faces a monster physically or emotionally. A character can have an inner-beast of not having credence in them or facing head on as a task that gets them to victory.…
Beowulf: The Absolute Epitome of an Epic Hero Throughout history there have been many literary works that portray an epic hero, defeating the supernatural and displaying great courage in difficult situations. Beowulf, written during the Anglo-Saxon time period, depicts the perfect example of the epic hero through the main character. Beowulf is considered an ideal model due to the characteristics given to the protagonist. The legendary warrior, Beowulf, accepted fatalism and accomplished significant tasks in order to save others from malevolent forces.…
In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…
Is Beowulf A Hero? We call many people heroes in the modern world, and we hold them to certain standards, higher than those we hold ourselves and those around us to. In the epic poem Beowulf, with an unknown author, there is some speculation as to whether or not the main character, who shares the story 's name, is truly a hero.…
The epic poem Beowulf was written in the era of the Anglo-Saxon’s. Beowulf is said to first be an oral poem. It is believed that someone wrote the oral poem, making it into a written a story. The author didn 't leave a signature, or a date stamp at the very least of it. He could have stopped a debate for going on for centuries.…
A hero could be defined in multiple manners depending on the person, but a hero is ideally illustrated as someone who is admired for demonstrating behaviors and decisions that are noble and ethically worthy of awe. The Anglo-Saxon period stretched over 600 years, starting around the 5th century to 1066, in which they were Germanic people who conquered England and declared it as their new home. The Anglo-Saxon had a very strong belief in courage, loyalty, and family, ideas that were common in their culture. “Beowulf,” an Anglo-Saxon epic poem written by an anonymous writer, depicts a very courageous character and his battles against evil. After reading the epic poem, one can deduce that the character, Beowulf, shares similar heroic qualities…
Martin Puhvel, a lecturer at McGill University and a Literature researcher of Estonian origin, highlights Beowulf’s strengths, “The fantastic swimming prowess of Beowulf may well stand out as one of the most amazing abilities of a hero endowed with seemingly supernatural powers” (276). Puhvel believes that Beowulf’s supernatural abilities and strength prove his appearance as a hero. Not only do his strengths classify him as a hero but his ability to put others safety before himself define him as an epic hero. Beowulf gives his proclamation on how he will defeat Grendel, “hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend” (31.438-440). Beowulf has enough confidence to fight Grendel without a weapon, which displays his great strength and capabilities.…
