Being A Tutor: Work Study

Improved Essays
When I first arrived at college, I did not expect to do all the things I am doing currently. One of those things would be a tutor, and help other people with their struggles in different classes. I was always good in subjects such as mathematics and science, but never would I have thought I would be a tutor. The reason for it is because I am not an outgoing person. I am not a person who would talk to anybody I do not know, let alone ask them if they need help. I always had the ability to help them but never tried. The reason is because of my speech disability. My stutter prevents me from having the confidence in helping others.
I previously worked in the laboratory at the Los Banos campus as a work study. I liked the job because it is the type of field I wanted to go in. I decided to leave the laboratory to be in the tutorial center so I could face my fears. Without a doubt, it is the best decision of my life. It helped me out speaking to people I don’t know and have confidence in speaking. Because of tutoring, I have gotten a lot better with my public speaking skills. I had enough confidence to be a leader on the high school orientation event. I was a leader for my group and gave them a tour of the campus and shared my college experience. That was the best accomplishment I experienced in my life. Now I have the confidence to do job interviews, public speaking, etc. As for my tutoring experience, I couldn’t have asked for a better one. I had the chance to not only help other students who needed help in school, but I also made new friends with all my co-workers. We also try to help each other to improve on our tutoring skills. We try to advise to each other what we could do different to help our tutee. Also, when one of us do not know how to do a type of problem, someone else would come in and help us tackle the problem. We are like one big happy family, always helping each other out. As to my personal experience with tutoring, I enjoyed every bit of it. I personally tutor people with some sort of disability. I tutor someone who is both deaf and mute, and someone who has a learning disability. At first when I heard I was going to tutor someone with these disability, I felt like it was going to be bad. Bad as in I wouldn’t know if I am going to be able to help them. On the first day I helped them, I wanted to know what exactly do they have problems with, as in studying problems I could help them out. Once I know what exactly they have problems with, I would be able to figure something out that could make their school experience better and easier. What helped me out the most was using all the tips and tricks I learned with the learning modules. From learning about the tips and tricks to study habits and how to improve them, to encouraging group studying. The tip I encouraged the

All throughout one’s life, you must encounter obstacles, face adversity head on, and keep your head high all the while. Thankfully, as a child, I wasn’t always alone in completing tasks or accomplishing things. My friends, family, and people around me in life were quite often to help me, but there were times that I had to accomplish things on my own. As I grew up, I began to hate asking people for help, and I wanted to try things for myself. I felt like it was cheating to ask for help, because in life after high school, aren’t you usually having to do things by yourself?…

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a date that will forever be a part of history, a tragedy that shook the world. I recall going back to school the following week, an 11 year old Muslim 7th grader ready to start her day. Boy was it difficult. The deadly stares I received while commuting on the NJ transit bus to and from school. I felt like I was the blame for every tragedy that has occurred.…

Ever since being a part of this lab, I have had much of a learning experience. My research focused on genetically fine mapping a specific region of a gene in pearl millet plants that translates into bristle production. This required me to plant and maintain F2 seedlings and screen them for recombination. I would not have known how meticulous every task in an experimental procedure must be before I started working in this lab. Having this role has taught me persistence even with issues with results.…

    After School Tutoring

The article that I chose to read was, The Effects of After-School Tutoring on an Individual ELS Student, written by Amanda Donahue (2002). The purpose of the action research project was to see if by participating in an After-School class with the teacher, the student would stay in school and inspire them to make progress in school. Since motivation is one of the main reasons ELLs drop from school, Ms, Donahue wanted to see if they had motivation and praise the students would increase their grades and performance, and essentially graduate from High School. I chose this article because it felt close to the issue that I am exploring in my action research project, the motivation for Long Term English students and see if I could implement it as…

    Revising A Writing Tutor

Writing is incredibly important for any student in college because it's the basis of your work. Therefore having a writing tutor is a huge privilege. The expectations I have about going to a writing tutor is that he or she will help me come up with ideas for my writing assignments, as well as for the drafting and revising aspects of it. He or she will also find flaws in my writing assignments and give me input in order to become a better writer. I envision my writing session as me sitting with my writing tutor going over the instructions for a writing assignment if I have not started yet, or revising my paper if I'm close to finishing it.…

Tutoring Tips Application Plan At my next shift, I intend to implement the following plan for a successful session: I am going to introduce myself to the students because this moment can break the iceberg and makes the students feel welcome and more comfortable with me. Also, I am going to spend one more minute to get to know the student a bit (his/ her classes, native language, and so on). I am going to ask the student how I can help him/ her, and then we read together the assignment sheet to understand the teacher's instructions.…

The day I said, “Hi, welcome to Cane’s,” my life completely changed. Applying to Raising Cane’s and getting a job as Cashier has been the best thing I have done for myself. I put myself out in the world and had to talk to real people and not high school students anymore. Raising Cane’s has changed me as a person; before I got my job I had zero confidence in myself. I have always had a hard time talking to people, but getting a job forced me to go out and actually talk to people.…

Giving back to the community is the best way to describe the tutoring I did at Bessemer City Middle School. Bessemer City Middle is a school in a lower socioeconomic area and most of the students are from families who fall below the poverty line. I helped the students during the school day, but homework wasn’t the only thing we worked on. The tutoring sessions were also mentoring sessions, so I served not only as a tutor, but also as a mentor to the students. Once or twice a week I would meet with students who needed extra help in school.…
