One thing I need to take into consideration is that I should pause when I forget what I will mention next. Not only will this strategy help me focus to get back on track, it will prevent me from using filler words which will distract the audience.
I consider myself to be a good listener when consulting with others about their personal problems, but besides that, I have difficulty staying focused during speeches and lectures due yo psychological, physiological, and physical noise. Throughout the quarter, I want to learn how to focus on my other peers’ speeches so I can learn from them. Becoming a better critical listener will in turn make me become a better speaker. To improve my listening ability, I will make sure to let others complete their sentences, take useful notes, and learn to relate new ideas to old ideas. What I am most worried about when publicly speaking is getting the attention of the audience. Often times, I am unsure whether or not the audience is paying attention to my words or have stopped paying attention to me. I need to learn to take the demographic of my audience members into consideration in order to present a successful speech. In other words, I need to work on getting the point across. I am the queen of overcomplicating everything to the point of rambling into nothingness. This usually results from freezing up while I speak. I find that when I forget what to say next or forget to mention a vital point, my brain scrambles into oblivion and goes into overload. By implementing the techniques that I have read, such as pausing instead of depending on filler words, practicing in a similar speech environment, and organizing the main points of my speech ahead of time instead of memorizing a fully written out speech, I will definitely improve as a speaker when the next speech rolls
