My Public Speaking Report

Improved Essays
I consider myself to be a poor public speaker based on my past public speaking experiences. From freezing up when reciting a poem in front of a huge crowd during an assembly to messing up on the Pledge of Allegiance during the Memorial Day ceremony, I have a lot to learn.
One thing that I need to keep in mind is to be concerned with information honesty. There were numerous times when I didn 't tell my audience the truth or even dragged on a speech because I didn 't research the topic completely. I didn’t bother to look for more citations besides online articles on the first page on the search results. When I needed actual quotations, I often created false quotes with fake monikers. Looking back at my previous speeches, I was blatantly unethical …show more content…
One thing I need to take into consideration is that I should pause when I forget what I will mention next. Not only will this strategy help me focus to get back on track, it will prevent me from using filler words which will distract the audience.
I consider myself to be a good listener when consulting with others about their personal problems, but besides that, I have difficulty staying focused during speeches and lectures due yo psychological, physiological, and physical noise. Throughout the quarter, I want to learn how to focus on my other peers’ speeches so I can learn from them. Becoming a better critical listener will in turn make me become a better speaker. To improve my listening ability, I will make sure to let others complete their sentences, take useful notes, and learn to relate new ideas to old ideas. What I am most worried about when publicly speaking is getting the attention of the audience. Often times, I am unsure whether or not the audience is paying attention to my words or have stopped paying attention to me. I need to learn to take the demographic of my audience members into consideration in order to present a successful speech. This includes choosing a more engaging topic others will be more interested to learn

In other words, I need to work on getting the point across. I am the queen of overcomplicating everything to the point of rambling into nothingness. This usually results from freezing up while I speak. I find that when I forget what to say next or forget to mention a vital point, my brain scrambles into oblivion and goes into overload. By implementing the techniques that I have read, such as pausing instead of depending on filler words, practicing in a similar speech environment, and organizing the main points of my speech ahead of time instead of memorizing a fully written out speech, I will definitely improve as a speaker when the next speech rolls

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

To be honest I was never a good public speaker there are times I avoid public speaking there are certain fears I had such as tongue tied, forgetting my lines, the awkward silence when I try to make a joke or point and by being myself blurting out words like "stuff" or "shit" unconsciously. I know it's so unprofessional but it happened quite a few times. After speaking in public I kinda dwell on what I said something that bothered me or that was unsaid.…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

I’m sitting down in my English classroom, waiting for my teacher to call me up. When I hear my name being called; a rush of panic runs through my whole body, my heart starts to race, my hands start getting sweaty, and when I opened my mouth not a single word comes out. Public speaking was a challenge because I always feared people would judge me over what I had to say and it became one of my insecurities. During my junior year in high school, I decided to take speech and debate so that I could gain the confidence to speak in front of an audience. I had participate in Redlands East High School Speech Competition where I talked about how we should not judge anyone under any circumstances, using homelessness as an example.…

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…
