Late at night, firemen sitting at a big round table playing a silent game of poker as the alarm goes off ringing the whole building. “The flutter of cards, motion of hands, of eyelids, the drone of the time-voice in the firehouse ceiling ‘...one thirty-five, Thursday morning, November fourth...one thirty-six...one thirty-seven A.M….”’ (p. 38) When Beatty was introduced into the book he was said to be a usual fire captain who acted much like Montag in his actions and as well as in his thoughts as a firefighter, later on to figure out that he was everything but a usual man. As Montag changed throughout the book Beatty stayed the same even in the face of conflict. Beatty’s outlook on books is always the same he says they are horrid and useless

“Once upon a time!” Beatty said. “What kind of talk is that?” (34) This quote is significant because Montag completely disregards the fact that Beatty is the captain, and puts himself at risk. A fireman finding anyone else suspicious is already risky, from captain to fireman is as dangerous as it gets.…

‘Someone here…’. ‘We won’t answer.’ Montag lay back against the wall and slowly sank to a crouching position and began to nudge the books, bewilderedly, with his thump, his forefinger. He was shivering and he wanted above all to shove the books up through the ventilator again, but he knew he could not face Beatty, again. He crouched and then he sat and the voice of the front door spoke again, more insistently.…

““Don’t judge a book by its cover,” someone said.” (148). I found this quote to be quite funny and ironic because it’s very cliché to our modern society, yet it is also known in Montag’s society; a place where all books are burned. However, the person saying this phrase is against the firemen status quo. What if, these book representors were actually a mirror image of today’s society?…

Captain Beatty is an unpredictable and strict man who may not be all that he seems. In the beginning of the book, Montag is seen to have a “fierce grin” that “never went away” and has been a fireman “since [he] was twenty” or for “ten years”(2,5). To do a job this long you need to like and respect your boss who in this case is Captain Beatty. When Montag goes to a call and burns a women alive who “stood below like a small girl” surrounded by “slaughtered birds[books]” he stays home “sick” from work the next day (34,36). After Beatty comes to visit him and preaches that the government is right Montag sees that he is becoming like his boss and begins to rebel by “putting his hand back up [grill of air conditioning system] and took out two books… moved his hand down and dropped the books to the floor”(63).…

Throughout the story “Fahrenheit 451”, Beatty seems to dislike books for several reasons. The main reason is that Beatty wants to be the one in control of the books' answers. Obviously, Beatty has spent most of his life in reading books. He thinks that books are not worth reading because they contradict themselves a lot. That is clearly stated when he tells Montag that," the books say nothing!…
