Kaun Hai Bayaan? (Who is Bayaan?)
“Bayaan” is a local-impact initiative located in the state of Maharashtra in India, that is dedicated to enabling communities to reclaim their agency for narration by reimagining their positionality as subjects of narratives, to consumers of narratives.
Kyun Bayaan Karein? (Why should we narrate?)
This project is centered around highlighting the privilege of consumption. Consumption is a consumer-driven and producer determined force, wherein the construction of the “consuming subject” determines who can be constructed as a “consumable subject”, to borrow Williamson’s vocabulary.

In order to ensure that the curation is appropriate for the audience, the project will recruit members of the village, local artists and volunteers from the city of Pune willing to help with research. We will collaborate with them to understand what kind of images are more interesting for the audience and use that analyses to better curation. In addition, attention will be paid to how the audience reacts to certain images during the exhibition and any trends in behavior will be noted.For the first exhibit, I’ve shortlisted the cover of the 2007 Berlin edition of the National Geographic, the December 2106 cover of “Geography and You”(a local geography publication) , the cover of “India Today”(a political journal), a photo-essay on Northern India published by the Huffington Post in January 2014, the Lonely Planet Guide to Maharashtra and the New York Times coverage of the current demonetization in India.
Permission to display images: Based on a reading of the terms and conditions of the distribution of images of these publications, I’ve understood that so long as the payment is made for a copy of the magazine (online or otherwise) and due credit is given to the artist and publication, the images can be used for the purposes of this exhibition.
