Bailey is the son of the unnamed grandmother. His family doesn’t respect him or takes him seriously. He is the one driving the family to Florida. Although, it is his idea that the family should go to Florida, he can’t for the life of him figure out why he wants to go on this vacation to begin with, we do figure it out, however why he does not like going on road trips when the author writes “He didn’t have a naturally sunny disposition, and trips made him nervous”. (Line 29).
We then learn that he’s not in control of his family, especially his children, the entire trip, the daughter is rude to the restaurant owner’s wife, the son is constantly kicking him in his kidney to see a plantation house that’s not even in the same state they are. His mother is being bossy and condescending, his wife is not helping with the disciplining the children, and even the baby starts screaming. Their erratic behavior is spiraling out of control and he cannot seem to control them.
When the family, then runs into The Misfit, Bailey eventually loses it. Now if his nerves weren’t bad enough already, getting into the car accident just made them even worse. Before Bailey can figure out who this mystery man is, the grandmother immediately recognizes him as The Misfit first and by her doing so dooms the entire
