The purpose of doing this lab is to find the optimal condition of nutrients for bacteria to grow. Bacteria requires food just like humans but they need a solid base like agar to view their growth. That is why agar is used in this lab with a combination of other nutrients as variables to measure the growth of bacteria. Nutrients such as just agar, glucose, fat such as milk, and other types of agar products. Bacterial growth is best observed in petri dishes. The lab tries to show the best conditions for bacteria to grow.
Agar is a gelatinous substance used as an alternative to gelatin. It is produced from different seaweeds. Agar is mostly used in desserts and a thickener for soups but also used as a solid base to grow cultures on its surface. Agar was first used in microbiology in 1882 as it was discovered that it was a more useful solidifying substance than gelatin. Agar melts at 85 degrees celsius and solidifying at around 32-40 degree celsius. They are comprised of a cell membrane which encloses cytoplasm. Bacteria use asexual reproduction to split themselves and grow. They use binary fission where the DNA is split apart and the cells split into two. In this lab, the bacteria show be able to grow fairly quickly. The type of bacteria used in this lab are the everyday common bacteria found in your mouth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria are found in your mouth but one common type of bacteria is Streptococcus. It feeds of the nutrients that are passed through your mouth. This allows for the bacteria is be controlled because the nutrients used are the same the this bacteria feeds from. Bacteria is very common and we are always in contact with it.
