My impression of the Aztec culture is that even thought they were thought to be barbaric in nature because of their ritualistic killings they were actually very religious and kind. They were well educated and many described them as creative thinkers and mathematicians. This is evident through the engineering marvel of the city they constructed without the use of modern tools or transportation methods. Even though the Aztecs knew of the wheel at the time the city was built, they only used the wheel for toys. The Aztecs had a dynamic agricultural economy focusing primarily on farming.…

The Aztecs: A Very Short Introduction by David Carrasco is a succinct but comprehensive history of the, in many ways infamous, ancient Latin American civilization known as the Aztecs. His book goes through an overview of the foundation and creation of the Aztec culture and way of life, their expansion, their taboo rituals of sacrifice and reputation as a violent and warlike group, and eventually the fall of the civilization as a whole. The book as a whole speaks volumes in its simplicity; it gives readers an excellent sense of what this strange and once very powerful culture once was in, as the title suggests, a very short amount of pages. The book begins with the description of the massive and intimidating wonder that was the city of Tenochtitlan.…
Imagine a civilization growing crops in a lake. It seems strange and impossible, but the Aztecs figured out how to do so with their ingenious farming technique. Thriving in harsh environments, the Aztecs were ahead of their time due to their agricultural advancements. They were a Mesoamerican culture that flourished in Central Mexico between 1300CE and 1521CE. Historians should emphasize Aztec agriculture because of the influence of agriculture on territorial expansion, the value of agriculture to society, and the ingenious creation of chinampas.…

It connected the highlands of Guatemala to Mexico and Belize. This connection changed the way the Americas would interact for the rest of history. The Aztec civilization left the largest ruins from all of these civilizations, considering they were the largest empire at the time. Tenochtitlan was a large and prosperous Aztec city. Tenochtitlan became Mexico City which is now the center of Mexico with a population of almost 9 million people.…
Carrasco productively communicated his thesis of writing this book in the preface. The first chapter is set up to assist the reader by providing a general account of the “geography and geographical imagination of the Aztec people” (xii). The author profitably assists the reader in developing an representation of the Aztecs geography by integrating a quote by Eric Wolf that states, “Mountains from the massive backbone of this land, and these mountains set off the three precincts of the Middle American citadel: a central highland in south-central Mexico, a southern highland in southern Mexico, and a southeastern highland in southeasternmost Mexico and Guatemala” (1). The reader can develop a spectacular image of the geography of the Aztecs from this quote, so Carrasco did a splendid job of describing the Aztecs geography and geographical imagination. Chapter two used vivid imagery of the “cosmic tree” and the Aztecs “four quarters” to discuss Aztecs…
Pre-Columbian America is perhaps the most exotic period of American history for a number of reasons. The diversity of the region is unparalleled, furthered by the rapid succession of empires with great focus on culture. Great mysteries also come from this period. The sudden decline of powerful empires like the Maya and Moche puzzle scholars to this day. Human sacrifice also played a major role in religion throughout parts of this region.…

The Aztecs, as they are known, were a group of people who originated as a nomadic tribe in northern Mexico. Although the origins of the Aztecs are uncertain, they "are believed to begun as a northern tribe of hunter-gatherers whose name came from that of their homeland, Aztlan (“White Land”). " The Aztecs were also known as the Tenochca derived from their capital city, Tenochtitlan, and the Mexica. The Aztec empire was built in 1428 under leader Itzcoatl, forming a three-way alliance with the Acolhua people of Texcoco, and the Mexica in Tenochtitlan, and the Tepaneca people of Tlacopan.
