The Nazi’s killed approximately 6,000,000 Jews in concentration camps during the Holocaust. The Germans had 23 main concentration camps, each camp had about 900 sub-camps, in total the Germans established 20,000 camps between 1933-1945. Auschwitz, a concentration camp during the Holocaust, was the most effective camp by strategically separating into Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Auschwitz III. Auschwitz III is located just outside Monowice, so it is called Monowice or Buna. “The camp in Monowice was one of the first, and also the largest of the sub-camps of Auschwitz. Over time, it attained the status of headquarters of the “industrial” sub-camps, and its commandant was a manager and administrator, as well as the commander of the SS garrisons that reported to him” (“AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU.”) Auschwitz III was made as a work camp. The inmates of Auschwitz III worked in a factory that made synthetic rubber. Auschwitz III had “Highest number of inmates, including sub-camps: 155,000. The estimated number of deaths: 2.1 to 2.5 million killed in gas chambers, of whom about 2 million were Jews.” (“Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp (Poland).”) Auschwitz III contained up to seven gas chambers, they used a poison gas called Zyklon-B. Auschwitz III also provided a slave-labor working opportunity for people not in the Jewish religion. All in all Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Auschwitz III increased the efficiency of the way the Germans wanted to use Auschwitz as a whole.
