“Should everybody write?” This is the question and title of Dennis Baron’s essay about the writers of today compared to the writers of the past. He provides examples of the first instances of writing used for communication in presenting the clay tokens that merchants used for tracking inventory. He then discusses popular opinions about writing from historical greats such as Socrates and Mark Twain. Baron provides commentary on both sides of the issue and how the development of new technology has always been the catalyst for change. During the course of the evolution of writing, Baron relates that “authorship” was an honor that was limited to only a select few.…

The Fortunate Reader: The Value of Organization, Evidence, and Audience In “The Fortunate Traveler: Shutting between Communities and Literacies by Economy Class,” Suresh Canagarajah wrote about his bilingual experience. This happened in Sinha’s editorial, “Why do doctors commit suicide?” (2014). He argues that a doctor who is able to express their fears, emotions, frustrations & can receive help is a more efficient doctor and that factors in the medical culture could be a possible influence of their frustrations (Sinha, 2014). His argument is ultimately not correct because of his minimal use of logos, pathos and ethos. The author’s use of audience is ineffective because he makes an effort to appeal to multiple audiences.…
My past experiences with writing I would have agreed with the thought of writers have audiences. This is no longer true for me after reading Ong’s article “The Writer’s Audience Is Always a Fiction”. I was always told, writing to catch a specific audience attention is the key to having a successful piece. I now agree with Ong, the thought of an audience should be used for the writer’s advantage.…
The concepts of genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are alike in their significance to the process of writing. They can be distinguished not only by their definitive meanings, but by a series of questions considered in the early stages of writing; what do I want to say, how do I want to say it, and who do I want to say it to? To these questions there are no clear-cut answers, empowering the writer to explore a variety of topics. It is important to understand that genre, audience, and rhetorical situation are not considered in a sequential order, nor are they exclusive to planning. In fact, the development of new ideas can occur in any stage of writing.…

To say that this is just a problem is a half sited understatement, but to realize the controversy that mass incarceration has caused around the globe is overwhelming. Mass incarceration can be defined as a large percentage of individuals who are imprisoned. Mass incarceration has taken its cynical toll on the U.S ever since the late 1970s, however having more negative effects on the community than good the incarceration rate has quadrupled since then, making the U.S have the highest incarceration rate in the world. With no programs to help prepare and assist former convicts transition back into the social system, these individuals are two out of three times more likely to be re-incarcerated. In “Ricardo’s Difficult Idea”, the audience seemed to be the general public; however, he considers students to be the ideal audience. The author, Krugman, even referred to himself a few times to explain his point of view. The author didn’t specify who the audience actually is. However, Bastiat’s “A Petition” seemed to be just the opposite.…
