Atticus Finch, is the protagonist in the famous novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. A protagonist in literature, is the leading, or one of the major characters in a book, or any other forms of literature. In the story written by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is protagonist because, he is the character trying to pursue th goal of the story. As one of the most well known and important citizens in Maycomb, Alabama Atticus’ needed not to worry much despite it being the Great Depression. Owing to the fact that, he always displays exemplary behavior and is a humble, clever attorney. Everyone in the town respects him, even the poor. Atticus is the moral backbone Maycomb County, he is the one who everyone in the county should look up to. Simply because he represents the basic morals most people at this time lacked, and believes every human-being is equal. He is an inteligent and good lawyer who fights for racial justice and equality. He is the protagonist, in To Kill A Mockingbird, and fights against the antagonist Racsim in the story. Atticus defended a innocent man; Tom Robinson, against a racially biased jury. Jem during chapter , disrepects Mrs.Dubose for making racist comments, but Atticus still makes him apologize. “He did not begin to calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs.Dubose owned, until the ground was littered with green buds and leaves.” ( Lee.103 ) This quote is showing us that Jem hads done something to wrong to Mr.Dubose. Atticus comes home, see what has happened and asjes Jem about it.. ““Jem,” he said, “are you responsible for this?” “Yes sir.” “Why’d you do it?” Jem said softly, “She sad you lawed for niggers and trash” “You did this because she said that?” Jem’s lips moved but his, “Yes sir,” was inaudible. “Son, I have no doubt that you’ve been annoyed by your contemporaries about me lawing for niggers, as you say, but to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable. I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk wih Mrs.Dubose,” said Atticus” ( Lee.104 ). Atticus also defends racial justice in Tom Robinson’s case, even though the people of the town antagonize him for being the defense attorney for a black man. When the jury announces that they’ve found Tom guilty without any evidence, this is an example of how Atticus cares for humanity no matter what color skin color they are. The jury made their decision the day they found out Tom Robinson was a black man, but this didn’t stop Atticus from fighting for Tom.
