For example, Atticus teaches the kids courage by saying “It’s when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). This quote shows how Atticus is teaching the kids life lessons and being a good father. Atticus also teaches the kids bravery, and he teaches them this by sticking up for what he believes in. Since Atticus is not a racist he does not believe in the town mob. He shows this bravery by defending himself and Jem against the mob, therefore showing he is a good father. When Jem and Scout get harassed by Mrs. Dubose every day when they walk by her house, Jem snaps when she is poking fun at Atticus. Jem than wrecks Mrs. Dubose's flowers and making a mess of her yard, resulting in Jem's punishment.
