Tips For Installing New Attic Insulation

If you want to keep your home warmer this winter and reduce your power bill, you should check the insulation in your attic. You may not have enough, or the insulation you have could be wet or compressed and not doing its job. Here are a few things to know about getting attic insulation installed.

Prep The Attic First

Start with an inspection of your attic. If your roof is leaking, you should fix it before you put in new insulation because when insulation gets wet, it doesn't work as well. Next, pull up old insulation that is moldy, wet, or compressed. If the same insulation has been in your attic for decades, you may want to let a contractor remove it, or at least take a look at it before you take

The insulation is installed by blowing in small pieces until it accumulates to the desired depth. You need to use power equipment, but you won't have to stand up and move around as much to install it. It's also the best choice if there are irregular spaces in your attic since the tiny pieces can fall into gaps and cracks.

DIY Or Contractor

You can buy both types of insulation at a home improvement store and rent the tools needed for installation if you want to do it yourself. However, if you aren't handy with home improvement projects, then hiring a contractor is the best way to go. For one thing, you must be careful while working in a tight space that you don't lose your balance and accidentally break through the floor.

It's also important to install the insulation properly. It must go all the way to the edges, but you don't want it to block air circulation in the attic or you may face problems with ice dams on your roof in the winter. Adequate circulation space must be left near the roof of a small attic as well as the eaves. Also, you have to plan the work properly.
