Poseidon is the sea god, an Olympian god, and one of the sons of Cronus and Rhea (Daly 106). He is the brother of Zeus, Hestia, Hera, Demeter, and Hades. He is also the uncle Persephone, Apollo and Artemis, Dionysus, Hermes, Athena, Hephaestus, and Ares (D’Aulaire) . His wife was Amphitrite (Daly 106-107). Here is the story: After Zeus swallowed her, Metis sat inside his head hammering a helmet and weaving a beautiful robe for the child who was, instead of a boy, a girl. Soon, however, Zeus began to suffer from awful headaches and all the gods and goddesses came rushing to try and help him. Skilled Hephaestus seized his tools and split Zeus’s head open. Out sprang Athena, fully grown, wearing the helmet and robe that her mother had made, while her gray eyes flashed. Thunder roared louder than ever, the gods stood in awe (D’Aulaire 34). He tried to take Athens from Athena saying that he could help Athens more than she could. Athena and Poseidon showed themselves before a court of gods. Poseidon struck his trident into a rock. Water gushed out, but it was salty, useless seawater. Athena planted the first olive tree, giving Athenians wood, fruit, and oil. The court declared Athena’s olive tree more beneficial than Poseidon’s ocean water, and that Athens still belonged to Athena. Later, the olive breach became a symbol of peace (Daly 107).
Poseidon created the horse and its bridle; the bridle controls the horse. He probably started horse racing also. The horse was very sacred to Poseidon (Daly 107).
Poseidon is also starred in the story of how the Minotaur was created. Poseidon gave the ruler of Crete, King Midas, an amazing bull, intended for sacrifice. King Midas could not bear to kill such a fantastic evening creature. Poseidon, in a wrath, caused King Midas’s daughter, Princess Pasiphae, to fall in love with the mighty beast. She later gave birth to the legendary, half-bull and half-man, Minotaur (Gill 8).
The Jews stayed under the rule of Persia for about 200 years. A king from Macedonia, Alexander the Great, conquered the Persians. He let the Jews stay in Judah if they wished to. He soon left due to his demanding troops that threatened to rebel (ConnectED Ch. 6 Lesson
