The novel that I selected for my assignment was “Daniel's story” By Carol Matas. The story takes place when Hitler and his army were evacuating Jews out of Germany. This was called the Holocaust (1933-1945). The main character of the book is Daniel, a 14 year old kid whose religion is jewish. He is the oldest child in his family, which consists of his Mom, his Dad and his Sister. Daniel and his family are living a pretty decent life. His Dad owns his own shop where people from all around go to shop at. His mom is loyal to her family and hard working, and his sister is a magnificent violin player. Another form of technology that was used during the time of this book were the gas chambers. It was a killing method the germans used to wipe out a bunch of jews at a time. They would usually send the sick and old to the gas chambers since they were unable to work as good as healthy jews. This technology was used back during the holocaust and in this book. A big event that happened in the book and during this time period was “the night of broken glass”. It was called that because all you could hear was glass breaking.On this night germans destroyed and looted all of the jewish stores. This happened in the story to Daniels Dad’s store . A big event that was going on during this time period and in the story was the war, which would be known today as world war 2. What saves Daniel and his family is the ending of the book when the U.S army beats the germans at the camp and they surrender. The united states army saved most of the jewish people's lives and defeated Hitler and his army. In world war 2 the the germans used lots of weapons. A popular weapon the troops used during this time was the astra. It had many different models, it was a modern day pistol that german soldiers
