“Murder” is the killing of any person with malice aforethought; either expresses or implied (South Carolina Code of Laws, 2014). It is also the same meaning of a homicide. The three different types of homicides are natural, suicide, and accidental. Every investigation starts off as a homicide until proven otherwise. There are many circumstances in determining what kind of homicide has occurred in the investigation. Even though every investigation starts out as a homicide, they are classified differently (Orthman & Hess, 2013). There are similarities and differences with in the procedures that an officer has to follow when investigating a death.
The officer that response to a homicide first thing he or she should do is to see is there a possibility of life remaining and the officer should summon for emergency medical assistance. After, the officer has discovered that the person is deceased they should secure and protect the crime scene. He or she has to make sure they collect any evidence they see around or on the body.
