Asteroid and Comet Impacts: What Can and Should We Do?

Michael McParland
Physical Science: Extraterrestrial

Term Paper The Earth has been hit countless times by asteroids and comets throughout its existence. These impacts are extremely dangerous and need to be monitored in order to be prepared for future collisions. The size of the asteroid or comet directly impacts the damage that is caused. The bigger the object, the larger and more dangerous the impact. Asteroids and comets differ in their composition, their creation and the impact they leave on Earth but do follow similar lifecycles. Asteroids, also known as planetoids, are small, airless rocky objects that revolve around the sun in space. Due to their size,

Most asteroids are located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This ring of asteroids contains hundreds of thousands of asteroids that range in size from being relatively small to being more than 60 miles in diameter. Asteroids are leftovers from the creation of our solar system more than 4.6 billion years ago. Back then, when Jupiter was created, it blocked any bodies from forming in the gap between Mars and Jupiter. This caused the objects there to collide and fragment into asteroids. As asteroids revolve around the sun, they collide into each other. This causes the asteroids to have an irregular shape. As for the surface temperature of an asteroid, the average temperature of the surface of an asteroid is minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Their physical appearance varies greatly. Some asteroids are solid cylindrical bodies whilst others are just piles of small rubble that are merely held together by gravity. Asteroids are also classified into three distinct categories based on their composition. The first classification if called C-type. They appear grey in their composition and make up around 75% of all known …show more content…
Comets consist of a few different materials including dust, ice, carbon dioxide, ammonia and other various materials. It is believed by Astronomers that comets are the remnants from the gas, dust, ice and rocks that were the origins of the solar system. Astronomers also believe that comets brought water and organic molecules to Earth that led to the creation of life. Comets mainly orbit the Sun but it is also believed that they are located in an area called the Oort Cloud which lies near the orbit of Pluto. The core of a comet mainly consists of ice and dust coated with dark organic material. As a comet’s orbit brings it closer to the Sun, the ice surrounding the comet begins to melt and fade away, creating a cloud surrounding it called a coma. This leads to the creation of the comet’s tail. As the comet orbits the sun, radiation pushes the dust particles to the rear end of the comet, creating the tail. The comet’s tail always points away from the Sun, due to the fact that the comet’s tails are shaped by sunlight and solar wind. Comets and asteroids appear very similar in physical characteristics but the most obvious difference is the lack of tails and comas in

All though they orbit the sun they are not considered planets. (7) Asteroids come in many different sizes that can range from a few metres to hundreds of kilometres in diameter. The Chicxulub impactor was 10 kilometres in diameter. Between Mars and Jupiter is the asteroid belt which is where most asteroids are found. Sometimes an asteroids orbit can be altered and come closer to the Sun, which means it is also coming closer to Earth.…

A way to mark a new beginning in your life is to dive into a pond and watch god - at least that’s what Janie does in the film adaptation of Their Eyes Were Watching God. The central theme of the film centers around the main character, Janie, and her search for true love and happiness. We get to see Janie struggle through two painful relationships before she finds “the one”. The film follows Janie as she pushes through a failed arranged marriage to Logan Killicks, and an abusive relationship to Joe Starks. She eventually meets a much younger man named Tea Cake, who shows her a new way and meaning to life.…

Incredibly, the impacts from the broken comet lasted six days, caused an obvious dark scar on the planet, and a fireball that reached heights of around 3000 kilometers(Martin, 1996). As of 2014, water vapor in the upper atmosphere of the planet was still a detectable sign of the impact (Kieffer, 2015). Shoemaker-Levy 9 not only had impacts on Jupiter, but also political ramifications on the earth. Just four years after seeing the comet’s impact on jupiter and realizing the actual danger these objects pose to humanity, the United States congress directed NASA to find 90% of all near earth objects (Howell,…

As an ice giant, uranus is made up of more ice than gas. Uranus has a much different composition than saturn or jupiter even though they are all gas giants. Jupiter and Saturn are mostly composed of hydrogen and helium, while uranus is composed of ices like water, ammonia and methane. Astronomers think that between 9.3 and 13.5 earth masses of Uranus mass is made up of these ices. Hydrogen and Helium only account for about 0.5 to 1.5 earth masses(Cain).…

Asteroids are pieces of rocks that aren't called planets based on the how small they are. The asteroids are orbiting around the sun mainly in what we call the asteroid belt - an area between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter. There are millions of asteroids in space, ranging in size from hundreds of metres across to as small as a pebble. Asteroids…

Neptune’s temperatures at its cloud is about −218 °C because of its great distance from the Sun which makes it one of the coldest planets in the Solar System. On the other hand, Neptune’s core temperature is around 5000 °C. Life cannot survive on Neptune since it does not have a solid surface; Neptune is a giant gas planet. Neptune is made of mostly methane, hydrogen and helium that extends to great depths, steadily merging into melted ice and water over a denser almost about the size of earth solid core. Although Neptune has a great distance and low energy input from the Sun, its winds can be three times stronger than Jupiter's and nine times stronger than Earth's.…

Apophis is an asteroid that sometimes passes across the earth’s orbit around the sun. An asteroid is a chunk of rock ranging in size from your average pebbles to nearly 600 miles across. This is the object that is said to have brought life to our planet and hah ended the life of the dinosaurs. All through time asteroids have passed near our planets and some have hit our planets but we were not affected by this because those were small insignificant asteroids. However, Apophis has the size of 3 full football fields in width.…

The Earth is a part of the solar system and it has been influenced by its elements since it was formed. The solar system was formed from a large nebular cloud. This nebular cloud began to spin producing energy due to the collision between particles. The composition of these colliding particles included metal-rich fragments such as iron meteorites, rocky fragments such as stony meteorites, and icy fragments such as comets. The solar nebula grew hotter and denser, forming a disk of gas and dust at its center.…

Jupiter and Saturn are gas planets whereas Uranus and Neptune are ice planets. One of the most talked about bodies is one of the more than 63 orbiting satellites of Jupiter named Europa. This satellite (or moon) is very large and is covered in ice but has a vast ocean underneath the ice. All of these planets and the large moons around Jupitar have also been mapped by satellites that we have sent out. The Oort Cloud is also located here and is 1.6 light years from the Sun and is the source of the Solar System’s long-period comets.…

The nucleus of the comet comprises 2 distinct segments joined by a neck giving it a duck like appearance. There are 19 distinct regions on the comet each named after an Egyptian deity. Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is named after its discoverers Klim Churyumov and Svetlana Gerasimenko, astronomers from Kiev who spotted the comet for the first time in 1969.…
