As The Tanks Approach Analysis

Decent Essays
As the tanks approach,
You show no fear.
Out of all the scared civilians,
You are the one that steps from the shadows.
Fearless.
Shameless.
You may not be fighting in a war.
But, you are a soldier.
Your government looks at you as a rebel.

The tanks are patrolling,
You throw your fears aside.

Why did you stand up to them?
Did you have a death wish?
What about your family?
What about your wife?
What about your children?
Why did you stand up to them?
Did they do something to you or someone you loved?
Why did you stand up to them?

Your government may look at you as a rebel,
But your country looks at you as a soldier.
As your family grieves,
Your country rejoices.
For someone finally stood up to them.
For someone gave them

Washington had us here, trying to keep soldiers like me whose 9 month enlistment was almost up to stay. I had a choice, one month and I could leave, or stay and continue to fight.…

Imagine yourself, sitting on one of the many transport ships heading towards an unknown island about to reveal yourself to an unknown amount of enemy troops. The morning before your arrival you are prepared a gourmet meal and briefed on how the plan was expected to go down. 7:00 strikes and you are now being guided down to your tractors to make the rest of the way to your destination, your mind is going wild with thought but you do know one thing for sure: you are part of a team, a band of brothers, and prepared to pay the ultimate price for any of them. This was exactly the case for the thousands among thousands of Marines that showed themselves in the historic Battle of Iwo Jima.…

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

Over the last 3,000 years, nations have been confronted with destruction, death, and poverty all at the hands of war. In this time frame as nations continue to perish, these disastrous effects have portrayed the role fear and separation has in the lives of citizens. Edith Hahn Beer in her memoir, The Nazi Officer's Wife and Tim O'Brien in his novel, The Things They Carried reveal this as both authors recount living during Nazi Europe and the Vietnam War. Through both experiences, Beer and O’Brien reveal the dominance fear has on the mindsets of citizens and the disconnect that is created between the citizen and his/her reality.…

A civilian once bombarded me with question over my war experience. As days began to drift by with no immediate end, I rebutted with a question. “When I say war, what do you think about?” He was hesitant, but he responded: Soldiers, enemy combatants, ships, tanks, Humvees, helicopters, jets, weapons, chemical weapons, the atom bomb, and death. I smiled, as if to say, that’s it.…

Amidst the diverse experiences of humanity, the uncertainty of death is a universal truth. In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, courage, fear, and shame play a pivotal role in how humans react to death. The soldiers in the novel struggle with having the courage to confront their innate fear of death. Failing to overcome this fear causes the soldiers to feel shame as a result of the underlying guilt from realizing their cowardice. However, in order for them to be truly courageous, it is imperative that they accept the discomfort of validating and combating their own weaknesses and fears related to death.…

The American soldier of Vietnam was a victim of circumstances largely out of his control. Being a soldier in any war is nothing compared to video games. You face the death of your friends and are constantly struggling to stay alive and sane. Another part of being a soldier is following the orders your superior commands you to do. There is never time to argue or change the orders you are given, and if you fail to complete those orders you will face consequences.…
