Since the painting is so large, it immediately can capture the attention of viewers. The painting also portrays a powerful mythological tale of a goddess with infinite powers, although, these powers are not important in the story behind the painting. Even though the painting is very big, the figures in the painting are pretty scaled. The way the painting is painted, it appears to look very crowded since every character is right next to the other. The painting places more importance on the characters rather than of the background, but the painter, Titian paints a bright sun peeking through the clouds in the upper right hand corner of the painting which gives the viewers some distraction from the middle of the painting. The lively and intense colors of the painting are a result from Titian’s usage of oil paint. Because oil paint is very thin and slow drying, artists who use this medium are able to layer and blend the colors of an artwork to create more distinct and deep colors that stand out. Their story, originally told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, begins with the struggle of love as Venus tries to stop Adonis from voyaging on his hunt by attempting to seduce him. Her struggle to keep him with her, because she knows of his fate, ends in tragedy as Adonis is killed by a wild boar. In the scene portrayed in the painting, Venus is anxiously trying to restrain Adonis from proceeding on his hunt by wrapping her arms around him, while her son Cupid simply watches from a nearby tree, appearing sleepy and uninterested to the event that is occurring. Cupid’s indifference, along with the unused bow and arrow hanging above his head, symbolizes Adonis’s ignorance. Besides Adonis’s disregard for Venus and her pleading, Cupid’s neglected bow and arrow may also reflect the idea that love is of no use to overcome tragedy, and that Venus’s love will not be sufficient to keep Adonis alive. While Adonis appears very calm, his dogs wait eagerly in the background, both possessing slightly annoyed expressions. Thus the dogs are representative of impatience.The story is foreshadowed by the desperate look on Venus’s face in her attempt to stop Adonis. The dark colors on the right side of the background may also be considered a sense of foreshadowing, for they suggest that as Adonis ascends into the distance he will be closer to his dark fate. The hints of sunlight that
