Purpose and Background Cells divide in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is used to produce cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell for growth, asexual reproduction, or repair after injury. Cells that are produced by mitosis are diploid, meaning that they have two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Meiosis is used to produce haploid cells that have only one set of chromosomes, a mix of chromosomes from both parents. Meiosis produces cells that are genetically unique from their parent cells.…
After, then other biochemical tests were performed that were specific to the gram- negative bacteria to start the identification process of the unknown. The results of the gram negative tests lead to the identification of the bacteria Alcaligenes faecalis. The gram stain procedure was the first test performed by isolating a colony from the pure culture streak plate. The gram stain was followed orderly right from the referenced laboratory manual. The test resulted to be Gram- Negative bacteria from the compound microscope which were pink and rod shaped that can be seen with the 100x objective lens with the oil immersion.…
As well, I noticed that once a pill bug wandered into the colder chamber, they would tend to stay. One thing we could do to further improve the experiment is to add more pill bugs to the chamber, in order to help prove the test's reliability.…
Our experiment required a few steps. The first step was to collect at least three pill bugs outside, which live under leaf litter, and put them into a small, plastic container. When we got inside,we took a two compartment choice chamber and put filter paper on the bottom to see the bugs more clearly. Then, we randomly selected one of the pill bugs and put it to the rightmost of the choice chamber. Then we played either classical or heavy metal music at 14 volume on an iPhone 6 for two minutes.…
Title Occurrence of microRNA expressions using two macronutrient deficiencies presented to Arabidopsis Thaliana Introduction Arabidopsis Thaliana was the model chosen for this experiment. It was used for miRNA expression because its entire genome is already sequenced (Weems 362-369). It is also easy to grow in difficult conditions and has a short lifespan.…
Materials. Numerous substances in the experiment were used. The most frequently used was the unknown due to the need to test its physical and chemical qualities. When a solution of the unknown was made, 1.000 g of the unknown and 1.0 mL of water was used to make it. To test for the possible ions, 1.0 mL of silver nitrate and 1.0 mL of nitric acid were used for the ion test.…
Isopods that live on land are called Armadillidium Vulgare, also known as pill bugs. Pill bugs consume dead organisms in decomposing soil which are acidic in nature. This trait makes these organisms beneficial to our environment, by getting rid of all the dead and decomposing organisms. Pesticides are commonly used to deter pests from eating crops, and could be getting rid of beneficial organisms such as pill bugs instead. An experiment was performed to determine the preference of pill bugs in choosing between an acidic environment as opposed to basic environment.…
Introduction For this lab, we were given two unknowns that we had to identify. One of the unknowns was live, meaning that we had to use morphological and biochemical methods to understand and discover what the organism was; and the other unknown was a digital unknown, that was identified through the genetic method, where we had access to a file with a DNA sequence and had to decode through a website that was given to us by the professor. We were given three milestones that we had to complete, two were naming our unknowns, and one was naming the arrangement of the unknowns. To complete these steps, we needed to work independently, using the skills that we learned in class to figure out our unknowns. Identification of Unknown Using Morphological…
The focus of this lab was to identify an unknown organism based on its characteristics and the results from each of the tests. There will be various of test to choose from in order to identify the unknown organism, which will eliminate numerous possibilities and narrow it down to one. All the fundamental skills that we have learned and practiced in the lab will be used to perform on our unknown such as aseptic technique, microscopic examination, the use of differential media, and determining if it’s positive or negative. Performing aseptic techniques is the most crucial step that requires the utilizing of transferring, inoculating, and storing bacterial cultures and media. Aseptic technique is defined as procedures that prevent contamination…
To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus. (1) A gram stain test was used in determining the shape, size and arrangement of the unknown bacteria (1). The unknown organism is heat fixed onto the slide, in order for the organism to be stained.…
Pill Bugs: An experiment Introduction Pill bugs are very small and can be found anywhere. Under rocks, in between cracks, in your science class; they are everywhere! However, it is common knowledge that pill bugs do not like to be in open spaces. There are just too many dangerous possibilities, and they don’t need to take the risks. In this experiment, we tested to see if light affected the decisions of where pill bugs like to stay.…
Gel electrophoresis is a method used for separation and analysis of molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, based on their sizes and polarity. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that carries most of our genetic information, and possesses a negative charge. During gel electrophoresis, DNA fragments can migrate through the gel also known as agarose when placed in a powerful electrical field. The rate at which the DNA fragments will move through the gel depends on their relative size. Horizontal gel slabs are commonly used on conducting gel electrophoresis.…
The lab instructions provided five components of cinnamon oil, of which one is the major component of clove oil. Of these five chemicals, only one, eugenol, has a phenol functional group. Because the IR spectrum of the distilled clove essential oil had a weak, broad peak around 3200 to 3500 cm-1, which corresponds to the hydroxyl/phenol functional group, there is evidence that eugenol is the major component of clove oil. Furthermore, since the IR spectra for the other four given chemicals would most likely not have such a peak due to their lack of phenol functional groups, there is even stronger reason to conclude that eugenol is the major component of clove oil.…
The bacteria used in the experiment are Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella pneumonia. These all bacteria will be culture in the nutrient broth. The first stage is making Nutrient Broth. Weigh out 5.8 grams of nutrient broth powder.…
Introduction In this lab report I use two different techniques to identify Unknown A and Unknown B bacteria’s. These techniques are gram staining and metabolic testing. I first used Gram staining to distinguished and identify the bacteria’s. Han Christian discovered gram staining in 1882, he had biopsy a patient lung that had pneumonia.…
