Unlike friendships of use and pleasure a friendship of goodness lasts as long as the friends are good. Many times in this type of friendship, the friends are useful to each other as well as pleasant to each other. According to Aristotle this type of friendship will last “as long as they are good-and goodness is an enduring thing.” (VIII.3) A lot of the time when two people fall in love and get married they have the highest type of friendship, a friendship of goodness. I believe that within a marriage there can be all three types of friendships. Aristotle says that a friendship on the account of pleasure has some similarities to a friendship of goodness as does a friendship for the sake of utility. Marriage requires that each person is responsible to be the best husband/wife that they can be. When issues arise concerning one of the partners in a marriage, the other partner should come to their side. They have a responsibility to do their best to defend their partner when they are not around to do it themselves.
