Arguments Against Mandatory Community Service

Decent Essays
Mandatory service would indeed hurt America in the year we live today. In my eye's it would just start conflict with are people, being that some people might want to volunteer and some might want to.We america live in a land of freedom why would we force are people to do somthing that they might not to do? I feel like if we give them a choice, more people would volunteer then if we would force them to do volunteer work ,or other services, they may not want to do. Mandatory service's would just cause conflict for everyone. Say if we where doing volunteer work and we wanted to, Then they had somone else doing volunteer work and they did not want to. They could be slacking or doing things wrong just because they are upset that they are being …show more content…
Some of us americans may not have time to do community service when others do have the time. Having to be forced to do it could lead to people not doing it and being in jail for failing to complete the community service. They may have jobs they need to attend to be able to keep a house ,car, and ect. Their may not be time for them to do so and, if their was it may be their off days. I think it would be great if everyone had to volunteer, But i think it would just cause problems and hate in america. And it would be going against are constitutional rights. Its called volunteering for a reason because people want to do it not because people do not want to do so. Community service may provide local and national benefits. But what about the people who already have good benefits through their job that do not want to be forced to do somthing against their will? I think if you are getting in trouble continusously then you should have to be forced to do community service at a extent. But if you are just a ordinaroly american who works everyday and has things to do you should not be forced to do somthing against your will. In 2009, 63.4 million american volunteered bye chocie. If we forced people i feel as if that number would drop because of people being forced and doing somthing they do not want to do. So thefore it would be a bad idea to force people to do somthing they would not want to

It is optional. Complimenting this claim, he further suggests that even if only half of students, world-wide, become involved in community service, that is still enough people to carry this out as an official quota in the school systems ( Eggers…

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

Volunteering not only helps socially in our communities, but also economically. I believe it helps economically because we could contribute to getting homeless people back in the workforce. In addition, many places that help people in need are more often than not on strict budgets, and I believe if people volunteer than perhaps those locations or agencies wouldn’t have to spend as much money on employees and instead have many rotating volunteers, this could also allow them to use funds for other urgent matters. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.…

Service means giving your time to help people. I don’t think this kind of service is forced; you have to want to be able to help out the community and be involved with what is going on. You need to be willing to work for the benefit of those in need without being mandated or wanting something in return.…

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

Being sent to prison and serving any sort of sentence is a very serious thing. Because so much is lost and taken, you lose your identity and become a number. They take your property seal it up and put it away until you are released. You are kept in a 6 by 8 foot cell, which they can keep you locked up in for 21 days straight if they feel like you are a threat to yourself or others. A crime is a crime, but all crimes vary, so why create a law that makes any person caught violating a certain law serve a mandatory sentence.…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…

This is true in terms or school or the judicial system. As a student at Florida Gulf Coast University I am required to complete 80 hours of service or I can no gradate. I also have to do at least 20 hours every semester with my sorority and even some of my classes require me to do community service hours. A lot of criminals are also given the option to complete community service over jail time. Even though this reason doesn’t seem the most personable or nice, it leads to a lot of good outcome due to the fact that those being forced to do community service often receive more of a blessing from it than those who are being served.…

Because of this, the aspect of mandatory volunteering can only encourage teens to get involved in their community. Once they get their feet wet, many realize it is something they love to do. For instance, an eighteen year old senior completed 350 community service hours after being required to do only fifty hours of service. These eye-opening opportunities in high school can lead to a lifelong passion of giving back. Additionally, encouraging students to volunteer also helps their their mind to grow in substantial amounts.…

Community service is something I have grown up doing. Throughout my life I have volunteered a lot of my time to organizations within my community. I have served at the community soup kitchen, helped young Monett Water Thrasher Swim Team members improve their strokes, and volunteered as a table worker at Monett High School and Monett Youth Club wrestling tournaments. I have always been very involved in helping individuals within my community. I feel as though performing community service as a child and young adult has shaped me into the person I am today.…
