With sex work, many people believe that by allowing prostitution to occur legally, it could lead to an outbreak of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This accusation has been proved to not be true. In 1980, Rhode Island had unintentionally legalized prostitution and in 2003, a criminal case brought attention to this, which was later corrected in 2009. During those six years when the public noticed prostitution was legal, it was found that the number of rapes decreased by thirty-one percent while the gonorrhea infection amongst women had also decreased by thirty-nine percent (Haltiwanger). For those who believe legal prostitution leads to outbreaks of STDs, it was evident through the United States' history that it had a better effect from its legalization. Rape had declined and so did an infectious disease since sex workers were allowed to work openly with whoever they wanted without fear of losing income or being arrested. Sex workers were given the chance to take care of their bodies and choose clients who were also healthy, which was the result of legalizing prostitution. The public's health could be improved tremendously if more people could engage in sex willingly with people who are clean of sexually transmitted diseases, like gonorrhea.
