Argumentative Essay: Should The Penny Be Abolished?

The penny has been around for over 200 years and has made it through history as the one cent coin. Over time it has a limited use and most of the time it is laying around lose in people’s pockets. Many people feel that the penny is necessary for keepsake purposes and to honor Abraham Lincoln. The Penny has had its highs and lows throughout its existence, but the single cent value seems to be lost in people's wallets and purses. The penny should be abolished because it is impractical in everyday use and it wastes valuable time. Not many people use the penny as much as they used to, dollar bills are easier to use in making purchases than pennies. A single cent cannot buy anything anymore and it makes the penny more useless than it seems. Some people dislike the fact that they have to fish through their bags for a penny because it takes up their time and the cashiers time also. In the article “Penny Pinchers” by Ric Kahn, he explains, “The National Association of Convenience Stores and Walgreens drug store chain estimated that handling pennies adds 2 to 2.5 seconds to each cash transaction (remember that we are including the occasional customer who spends 30 seconds looking for the penny in his pocket).” This is important because it shows how much time is lost from someone looking for a penny. Also in that article it is explained, “‘People fishing in their pockets . The cashier has to open a new bag of pennies. For me, it’s a waste of time I object to.’” Many people have their own opinions on the penny but this shows that this man thinks that the penny is a waste of the customer’s time and the cashier’s
