Historically, the justice system is biased towards people of color. With cases that date back to fifty years such as Emmett Till and more recent cases such as Trayvon Martin. These are cases when there is more than enough evidence to convict the defendants, but the verdict is “not guilty”. In The Coming of John, John kills a white man for raping his sister. Body cameras are intended to make the public feel safer around police officers. They are supposed to capture every interaction that a police officer has with a citizen. There are mixed feelings from citizens about the use of police body cameras. Some people feel that it will improve the relationship of police officers and citizens, while others feel as though it will not change the way bad police officers act towards people of color. There are definitely pros and cons of the usage of body cameras. In “Considering Police Body Cameras”, the author writes that body cameras can be used by training camps to show new officers what a day on the job is like (1802). This can be very beneficial to training camps because it gives new officers a real life view of what they will be encountering working as a police officer. The new officers will have a better understanding of what to do when arresting a citizen, instead of resorting to excessive force. Although there is footage a bad incident of a police officer and a citizen, the officer can still not be indicted or convicted of their actions because of the biased criminal justice system. The officers of the Rodney King and the Eric Gardner incidents did not have body cameras, but there was still clear footage of what happened. The officers of both victims were not held accountable for their actions. The footage on a body camera is no different than the footage from a camcorder or a cell phone camera. This proves that body cameras are useless to spend money on because bystanders can record a bad altercation of a police officer and a citizen.
